What we’re about
Glad you found us! Portland Art Guild is a supportive, inclusive group of art enthusiasts of all art skill levels. We're about creating community, improving our art skills, and providing low cost art classes to the public so learning about art is accessible to all. We host social/art events and aim to provide display opportunities.
We rent a wonderful, large space for Mondays, so that's usually when we hold in-person classes, although occasionally this may vary. Our online classes are generally on Thursday evenings, although this may vary. We always have many more people in our classes than it shows on Meetup, by the way.
We're a nonprofit run by volunteers, and you can join us and be part of our volunteer team. Information about joining the Guild is on our website. You can still take our classes without becoming a PAG member. Official sign-up for our classes is on our website: **https://portlandartguild.org/**

3-session series: $60 for PAG Members and $120/nonmembers.
Gouache is an exciting opaque and water-soluble medium used for both color sketches and finished paintings. The bold and vivid color of gouache work well for painting landscapes in the studio or plein air. Students will learn basic gouache techniques and color-mixing during the start of this three-week workshop. Practical tips for sketching your composition and simplifying complex scenes will be demonstrated by creating an initial value study. Students will create small colorful gouache landscape sketches while learning to build their landscape layer by layer: from blocking in the big shapes to adding those crucial details that make your painting pop.

Our instructor, Paul Clendenin, is offering this class free of charge. This is a basic watercolor technique class targeted at beginner/intermediate level students. The only requirement is a willingness to enjoy art in a relaxed, no pressure environment. We will have a good time. The instructor will discuss an approach to painting this small work, explaining the “plan like a tortoise, paint like a hare” philosophy. This approach will include employing a wet into wet initial application of colors with a “safe” stopping point, followed by a more intentional controlled application of colors by using wet onto dry technique. The final step will be applying details in a calligraphic manner.
If you click on the class on Portland Art Guild website, it will bring up the supply list for you to bring. Sign up & supply list
