What we're about

Glad you found us! Portland Art Guild is a supportive, inclusive group of art enthusiasts of all art skill levels. We're about creating community, improving our art skills, and providing low cost art classes to the public so learning about art is accessible to all. We host social/art events and aim to provide display opportunities.

We rent a wonderful, large space for Mondays, so that's usually when we hold in-person classes, although occasionally this may vary. Our online classes are generally on Thursday evenings, although this may vary. We always have many more people in our classes than it shows on Meetup, by the way.

We're a nonprofit run by volunteers, and you can join us and be part of our volunteer team. Information about joining the Guild is on our website. You can still take our classes without becoming a PAG member. Official sign-up for our classes is on our website: https://portlandartguild.org/

Benefits of Guild Membership include:
-Substantial discount on our art classes.
-Opportunities to exhibit/market your work and enter our in-house competitions.
-Attend informative Membership Meetings followed by free art technique demos.
-Make new friends!

The ability to draw accurately is the most fundamental of art skills, necessary for any artist. We’ll cover the crucial techniques guaranteed to improve your drawing, applying them to a variety of styles, including contour line work and fully modelled graphite work. We’ll experiment with adding vitality and expression to our work via gesture drawing, scumbling, and expressive mark-making. We’ll explore various materials, such as graphite, graphite powder, water-based pencils, ink, and colored pencil on toned paper. Students will bring objects to draw, as well as using photos references, thus making the artwork personal and meaningful.

The instructor’s goals are: 1) to make drawing easier, 2) to provide an opportunity for you to explore a variety of drawing styles, and 3) for you to leave with a body of work ranging from realistic to expressive. You might discover a way of drawing you never knew you’d love!

The class is tailored to any skill level, and from ages 16 on up.

Paint nature with confidence!
This workshop will give students the opportunity and tools to paint outdoors with confidence, and it is appropriate both for seasoned and beginning painters alike. During the first 30 minutes, the instructor will demo how to set up an easel, how to look for and hone in on effective compositions, and how to build up a painting from the initial base layer to the final wonderful highlights. Students will explore compositional sketches, after which they will paint their own plein air painting. The instructor will assist in answering questions and giving helpful tips and guidance. Everyone will be able to walk away with at least 3 compositional sketches and one final plein air painting.
