What we're about

Each month, we dive into the innovation and challenges of this new and quickly-evolving architectural strategy. We are a technical group with many meetings involving presentations and demonstrations of tools and libraries. This is a vendor-agnostic mission: we welcome discussions concerning solutions utilizing AWS, GCP, Azure, and others.

From Legacy to Modern Apps: Rebuilding Familiar Services with AWS Serverless

We have a special guest from AWS to help us modernize our applications! From Legacy to Modern Apps: Rebuilding Familiar Services with AWS Serverless Looking at existing systems and patterns today, and reimagining them built using a serverless architecture, can be challenging. It’s important to identify how you can transition to build services around event-driven patterns and to remove state stored in monolith applications. We’ll first take a look at the advantages of building with a serverless architecture and some of the best ways to think serverlessly. Next, we’ll learn how to re-architect familiar services to take advantage of the scale and cost-efficiency built in to serverless. We’ll look at how to structure a webhook service, an audit trail service, and a document versioning service first from a legacy standpoint, and then how to translate each into working within a serverless architecture. Along the way, we’ll discover which AWS services are common in serverless architectures, and we’ll visit tools like the AWS SAM CLI and AWS SAM templates that can help with provisioning and deployment for serverless applications. Finally, don’t forget your laptop so you can code along as we dive into implementing the architecture we define and actually build a serverless webhooks service. About the speaker: AM Grobelny is a Senior Technical Evangelist based in Seattle, WA and is focused on enabling all kinds of software developers to be successful on AWS. AM enjoys using most languages, but C# and TypeScript have a special place in his heart. AM has built and talked about software solutions at companies like Box, Volusion, and SmartVault. Previous to working in technology, AM was also a professional educator, and he retains a passion for helping people more easily understand difficult concepts. Schedule: Doors Open at 6 p.m. Programming to begin at 6:30 p.m. with Q&A after. Drinks and Light Snacks will be served. **Interested in speaking at a future event? Message us and let us know!
