Beginning marimba class
This is a drop-in class for anyone at any level. Even if you've never ever played an instrument in your life! Kite will start you off with a simple part that you can learn on the spot. You'll progress to more complex variations whenever you're ready. We know 3 or 4 songs. People are encouraged to learn multiple parts for each song, to experience it from different perspectives. This helps with "locking" your part with another part. Plus this way everyone gets to play the bass! We're a non-performing class, except for *very* casual get-togethers and picnics with the other marimba players. There's no schedule, no pressure. Everything happens in its own time. It's not a race, it's a journey. The class size is small enough for people to get individual attention. Kite will often focus on one person for a minute or two, giving the rest of us a chance to help another with a marimba part, or just chat and get to know one another. Many enduring friendships come out of marimba class! Traditional African music is quite structured. This is NOT a drum circle. But once you're familiar with marimba, you're encouraged to make up your own variations and even improvise solos. Several people in the class are not on Meetup.com, these people are listed as guests of Kite. Are you a marimba "regular"? Get a $3 discount for this class if you attended last week.

What we're about

Come play the music of Africa in a group setting (6-8 people). Absolutely no musical experience required! No music-reading, play by ear! Marimbas are supplied, and practice marimbas are available.

The music is mostly from Zimbabwe, but includes other African countries and the occasional American song. The marimba ensemble consists of the bass, the baritone, two tenors and three sopranos, 4 octaves total. Plus hand drums, shakers, and singing!

The beginning class is a drop-in class. The intermediate and advanced classes require marimba experience and the advanced classes require a long-term commitment. The instructor, Kite Giedraitis, has taught marimba to hundreds and hundreds of people and loves working with total beginners. All classes taught in his private studio near SE 39th & Holgate. Join the meetup to get the exact address.

Most people in the classes are not on Meetup.com. Often meetup.com will show only "1 person going", but that doesn't mean we won't have a full class!

Special offer through December 2016: your first class is free!
