What we're about
Possibilities is open to all genders and orientations, and welcomes allies from both the gay & straight communities at our bi/pansexual focused events. Possibilities is not a hook-up or dating group. You can also find us on Facebook, where we have a public page at www.facebook.com/possibilitiescalgary and a private group. Most of our online discussion takes place on the Possibilities facebook group wall.
What is Possibilities?
Possibilities is a group that aims to create a strong, safe, vibrant bisexual + pansexual community in Calgary. We hope to increase bisexual and pansexual visibility while maintaining the confidentiality of our members. We also welcome members who experience attraction to multiple genders but choose not to label themselves.
Our structured discussions focus primarily on issues regarding bisexuality and pansexuality, but we are open to people of all genders, orientations, and relationship structures. We have a structured discussion group on the first Wednesday of each month from 7:30-9:30 pm. The discussions are held at the Calgary Sexual Health Centre. We also have a coffeeshop social night on the third Wednesday of each month. Details of both events can be found on the Possibilities Meetup site at meetup.com/Possibilities-Calgary-Bisexual-Pansexual-Community/. On months with a fifth Wednesday, we often host a social night.
In addition, we host the Community Café in collaboration with Calgary Outlink. This event takes place on the second Friday of each month from 7-10pm at the Old Y Building for Community Organizations.
We are a quickly growing group and hope to become more involved in creating queer inclusive spaces and events throughout the city. We are pursuing official non-profit status, and are looking forward to exciting new endeavours in the near future.
Terms for sexual orientation have unique meanings for each person who uses them, and many of these labels are rather flexible. The terms bisexuality and pansexuality have a significant amount of overlap.
What is bisexuality?
The term is sometimes used to mean the ability to be attracted to two sexes: male and female. However, it no longer has to mean that an individual is only capable of being attracted to people who fit within the gender or sex binary of “male” or “female” and “man” or “woman.”
The term can also be used to mean attraction to members of one’s own gender and members of other genders. Many people use the term while still having the capability to be attracted to a wide variety of genders and gender expressions.
What is pansexuality?
Pansexuality means the ability to be romantically or sexually attracted to people of all genders and sexes. Sometimes the term can be used to mean that the individual considers themselves genderblind, meaning that sex or gender are not a consideration in choosing a romantic or sexual partner.
One can also identify as bisexual or pansexual (or unlabeled) and still have a preference for a certain gender or sex. A person can also identify as bisexual or pansexual without ever having experienced a relationship with a person of a gender or sex to which they consider themselves attracted. Many asexual individuals also experience bi-romantic attractions which do not include the desire for sexual activity but share many commonalities with sexual bisexuality or pansexuality.
