What we’re about

They say the pen is mightier than the sword. The Power of the Pen: Vancouver Writing Meetup is for people who use the written word in pursuit of their hopes, dreams, income, etc. either professionally or personally.

What we do
• Discuss projects - imagined, pending, in progress, successes!
• Network with other writers in the Vancouver area (why should Portland have all the fun?) and cheer each other on
• Share best practices -- techniques, motivation, helpful books and tools, etc.
• Network with other area writing groups (such as NaNoWriMo and Willamette Writers) and possibly attend their events together

Who we are
We are all along the spectrum from enthusiastic beginner to professional and published. We write in multiple genres and forms (poetry, novels, short stories, etc.). Some are retired, some part-time, some have day jobs. We are professionally published and self-published and unpublished. All ages here. We're a diverse and interesting group with a sense of humor. Our organizers are unpaid, patient, generous volunteers who are passionate about writing.
When we are
As of summer 2019 we have two weekly writing sessions on Wednesday and Thursday evenings; see our event calendar for details. We also have occasional weekend sessions and occasional impromptu sessions. We strive for a monthly or at least quarterly educational session if we have content, energy, a volunteer speaker and caffeine. Members are welcome to volunteer to coordinate a writing session any time. We send newsletters/messages a few times a month at most.
What we are not
We don't have a formal critique group however members can coordinate or volunteer to make this happen. We aren't aligned along any political, religious or gender axis. We are not associated with a business, political party, church, fitness regimen, diet, or nonprofit. We are not someone's platform or marketing outreach project. If you have an axe to grind or an agenda to impose this group isn't a good fit for you.
The rules
Common sense and courtesy: No spam. No drama. Be kind. Be specific. Be constructive. Be mindful. Be open-minded. Be honest. Be respectful. Change your RSVP if you can't come after all. And if you bring chocolate you must bring enough for the group.  (just kidding)
