Who’s speaking?
Chris Bolam
Chris is the Head of Product at Sero, a scaleout business in Cardiff that is accelerating the delivery of net zero carbon homes for social landlords, home builders and end user residents.
He studied Environmental Science and GIS then, after a 6 year aberration as a very average software developer, saw the light and became a Product Manager. Chris now has 18 years experience defining, delivering, launching and marketing products for businesses as various as Amazon, Vodafone and Landmark Information Group. He is passionate about building empowered, high performing, multi-disciplinary product teams, and delivering value propositions that help improve lives and the planet. "
Nick Carlton
Nick has worked in senior leadership roles at a number of Cardiff-based businesses including Admiral, Confused.com and Coincover. He is now working on some business ideas of his own and as an independent consultant helping scale-up fintech businesses launch new products.
Like Chris, Nick also started his career as a software developer and later worked at Amazon. Is this where the similarity ends? Let’s find out.
What’s the themes?
Executing the Perfect J Turn - going from startup to scaleout with the right level of control and velocity
The business that gets a startup off the ground is often necessarily project based: one or several customers pays you to deliver your vision. But to scale, you need to flip to a product-led, market-focussed approach. It's a bit like starting off in reverse - you've got great control but that control becomes a liability at high speed. So how do you pull off the perfect J turn and have a full range of gears at your disposal?
Value Driven Management
As a business scales, shared values, principles and mission should be seen as an essential element of successful growth. But too often they are overlooked. How can they become empowering cultural foundations rather than just window dressing?
