Details

Curious? Triggered? We'll create a safe space as we talk to well-known author and cultural writer Helen Pluckrose as part of an open debate

"Have you heard that language is violence and that science is sexist? Have you read that certain people shouldn’t practice yoga or cook Chinese food? Or been told that being obese is healthy, that there is no such thing as biological sex, or that only white people can be racist? Are you confused by these ideas, and do you wonder how they have managed so quickly to challenge the very logic of Western society?"

This is how the synopsis to Helen Pluckrose's new book Cynical Theories starts, and it hits right in the heart of what us Pub Psychologists wanted to discuss for some time: wokeness, cancel culture, social justice warriors.

Many of us have heard these terms being thrown around in the media and wonder what they are about. Others get triggered as we often find ourselves on one side of the debate and alienated from the other. So what do they actually mean? And why are people getting so passionate about them. Isn't social justice something we all want and value? Is changing our language an important step in our development as a species to protect marginalised communities and make the world a better place, or is it an attack on our freedom of speech and liberalism taken too far?

In tonight's session our hosts Dr. Nash Popovic and Yannick Jacob will be talking to Helen Pluckrose and the rest of our virtual pub in what promises to be a passionate debate. We'll be facilitating this session carefully, make sure that all views and opinions are respectfully debated and we hope you know Pub Psychology as a space where everybody is welcome and where we value talking to each other about important issues.

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

Helen Pluckrose is a well-known author and cultural writer known for her critiques of critical social justice and promotion of liberal ethics, most notably in the grievance studies affair, for which she and her colleagues submitted a number of bogus academic papers to peer-reviewed journals in cultural, gender, queer and race studies, to see if they would get published and to highlight issues with the academic process. She's the editor-in-chief of Areo Magazine and her lectures, talks and interviews have 100000s of views on YouTube.
