"Data Science for Dinner: Recommending Recipes at Gousto" by Irene Iriarte

With Gousto offering up to 40 recipes a week, recommending the right recipes to our customers is key to being able to provide a convenient service that offers them meaningful choice. We have therefore implemented a recommendation solution, based on a hybrid recommendation approach that combines a purely content based recommender and a collaborative method based on clustering.

During the talk, I will discuss the lessons we have learnt during our implementation, the results we have achieved and discuss how the recommendation engine is integrated into the wider business.

Bio: Irene is a data scientist at recipe kit company Gousto. Since joining in 2016, she has been working on the development and implementation of algorithms, mainly focusing on forecasting and recommendations. Before joining Gousto, Irene completed a PhD in Computational Chemistry at Imperial College London.

"Accelerating Medical Research with Serverless technology" by Will Jones

Sano Genetics accelerates personalised medicine by matching participants to relevant research projects. Accessing the right patients with the right background costs thousands of dollars per participant, and research studies take months and years to complete with 30% failing due to the inability to recruit relevant participants. Progress in personalised medicine does not need to be this slow.

During this talk I will discuss our technology infrastructure and how it has allowed us to iterate extremely quickly and effectively so that you can too. The topics I cover include:

Serverless technology (AWS Lambda + Zappa)
Cloud Bioinformatics (Nextflow + Docker)
Automatic Database Migrations (Peeweedbevolve)

Bio

William Jones is the CTO of Sano Genetics, a Cambridge based startup that accelerates personalised medical research. William has a background in Computer Science and Mathematics and pursued a PhD in Mathematical Genomics and Medicine and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
