20th PyData Mallorca meetup: 3rd anniversary with R

Details

PyData Mallorca is proud to announce the 20th meetup, a very special meetup sponsored by Bluekiri (https://bluekiri.com)!

We are going to celebrate our third-year anniversary with a chapter dedicated to the one of the most important programming languages in Data Science: the R language.

LOCATION

This meetup will be held at the Auditorium of Parc Bit (http://www.parcbit.es/), Parc Balear d'Innovació Tecnològica. Thanks to Parc Bit (http://www.parcbit.es/) for letting us use the Auditorium!

You can find a complete map of Parc Bit (http://www.parcbit.es/) at:

Number 1, Son Espanyol (AUDITORI), is the place where we will meet.

AGENDA

7:00pm - Doors open and networking

7:05pm - Community announcements (Spanish)

News and information about the community. Share yours too!

7:20pm - Sponsor presentation

7:25pm - Keynote 1 + Q&A (English)

Nikky van Buuren: "Visualizations in R – Pigeons & The Basics of Shiny".

Nikky studied a master’s in mathematics and statistics at Leiden University in the Netherlands, graduated 6 years ago and has worked with R since in her own company as a (freelance) statistical consultant. She gave courses in R and Data Science and was also working in financial IT company for 2 years and researched Bayesian networks for another 2.

In this talk results of pigeon racing are used to illustrate R’s endless possibilities for visualization of data. Pigeon races are not very well-known; however, they could be more interesting than you might think. Pigeon racing is an actual sport and has been described before as "the sport with a single starting gate and a thousand finish lines". The thousand finish lines make this sport interesting for both visualization of the average speed per finish location, as well as for statistical calculations focused on correcting for the fall of speed over longer distances. The basic features of the R packages ggplot2 and shiny will be used to illustrate the unfair competition that Dutch pigeons currently face caused by geographic (dis)advantages. The most expensive price pigeon has recently been sold for 1.4 million dollars in China. Therefore, it is quite relevant to correctly classify these races. To help identifying the truly fastest pigeons, a newly proposed speed calculation in R will be introduced.

8:45pm - Refreshments and networking
