Online privacy and security with Rosie the Restarter #2

Online privacy and security with Rosie the Restarter #2

Details

NOTE: Unlike our other events, this event is only open to all women and non-binary people.

This is a follow up of an event we had in December with Rosie the Restarter.
But whether you've attended the previous event or not, you're most welcome to join this one!

Justine and Halima will be guiding the session. The event will have roughly the following outline:

  • We will introduce what threat modelling is and explain how this is something you are already doing in your everyday life, then show how the same way of thinking can be applied to protect your digital data

  • We will present different simple case studies and precise examples of using different tools and processes to keep your data private (to get technical, we will cover passwords, 2FA, VPNs, safe and private browsing techniques, intelligence gathering, etc. and briefly touch on end-to-end encryption) Any tool presented will be explained as intended for a non-technical audience.

  • We will rhythm the session with regular pauses for demos, interactive exercises and workshops. A laptop is not essential for the event as most exercises will not need one.

This event will not cover tools and threat modelling for journalists or activists.

Justine is a Research Scientist at Iproov, a London-based startup delivering secure online authentication as a service. In her spare time she co-created and co-organises an informal info-security group in London.

Halima is a software developer, volunteering with the Restart Project, co-organising the Rosie Restarter skill shares to encourage women to tinker and become restarter volunteers.

The Restart Project is hosting the event at 3Space, 3 mins of Bermondsey station (first street on the right when exiting the station).
