This April session we are going to have two talks of approximately 30min each:
### Building Microscopes with Python by Lizzy Brama
Abstract:
At the Francis Crick Institute a small team of scientists is developing the microscope technology of tomorrow. In order to disseminate the technology to the research community as early as possible, we try to publish our work in open access journals and keep code open source, which is one of the reasons why Python was chosen to write the device control software.
In this talk I will walk you through the story of the development of our control software, including a brief overview of writing custom C(++) extensions using Cython, the use of PyQt to write user interfaces, and the (not always obvious) pitfalls to watch out for.
### Functional Programming in Python by Leah Cohen & Chris Gearing
Abstract:
Functional Programming is a paradigm that allows you to construct complex behaviour from simple, easily testable units. It especially lends itself to a data pipeline, allowing you to build understandable transformations while retaining data purity. Discover the benefits and pitfalls of functional programming in Python, with examples from a real world project written in a functional style.
