**July 15, 2020 Update: Our games are still suspended due to COVID.**
Established in April 2014. We play pickup street hockey in Quincy on Saturday afternoons for about three hours, year-round. As long as the rink is playable, the game is on! The start time is 3 PM from March to November, 2 PM from November to March. Come late or leave early, whatever works for you. Adults only. You must be at least 18 (yes, 30's-40's-50's and up are welcome). We welcome average skilled players and people who've never played before. The goal is to have a good time, socialize, and have a good workout. This means we are not looking for ultra-competitive people, or A-level players.
It's a pickup game. There's no commitment. We make up teams each week based on whomever shows up. Please bring your sneakers (not roller blades), a stick, water (lots), and light and dark shirts (not grey!) so we can make up teams. Always two goalies.
Please see Matt, the Beverage Commissioner, if you'd like to take a turn at bringing the post-game refreshments some week.
Our preferred rink (5x5 play) is at our full size Brill Field rink (corner of Sea Street and Island Ave., in the Hough's Neck neighborhood of Quincy). The nearest public bathroom is the Dunkin Donuts on Sea Street (corner of Norton Road). If we have less than 14 Yes responses, we play 4x4 (or maybe 3x3) at the smaller Perkins Field rink (20 Narragansett Rd, in the Merrymount neighborhood of Quincy) or the Squantum Rink (84 Parke Ave., in the Squantum neighborhood of Quincy). Directions to Brill & Perkins rinks if you're taking the MBTA: Take the Red Line to the Quincy Center station. Transfer to the 216 bus (Hough's Neck). The 216 bus stops directly in front of the Brill Field rink. For the Perkins rink, get off at Grumpy White's Restaurant and walk a few blocks down Narragansett Road to the rink. Directions to the Squantum rink using the T: Take the 211 bus from the North Quincy Red line station. Basically you can walk to the rink from any stop in Squantum.
You'll receive an automatic invite on Sunday for that week's game, and a reminder email on Friday. If you're 10,000% positive you can make it, please respond Yes. If you have any doubt, please just post a comment that you're a Maybe.
The maximum number of people who can sign up each week is 22 (two lines of five for each team, plus two goalies). If the game is filled up and you want to play, please come an hour after the scheduled start time. Some people play for 1 to 1.5 hours and then leave, so space opens up.
I make the game call on/off (weather, numbers, etc.) and rink location (depends on the numbers) on Saturday morning about 10 a.m. Please respond by then if you're coming.
There are no fees to play. But Meetup charges us $106 every six months to host the site. I take up a collection about a month before the due date. Plus we purchase replacement balls and rock salt. Please pitch in. Thank you.
Please note, Meetup doesn't seem to work well with Yahoo email. You might not receive the weekly invites.
