Avantika Lal
"Predicting interactions between the SARS-CoV-2 genome and human proteins using R"

RNA viruses hijack a range of proteins inside host cells to assist in the replication and stability of their genetic material. I describe an R framework to predict potential interactions between human proteins and viral genomes, and demonstrate its application to the genome of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

Norm Matloff
"Sensible Approaches to Handling Unbalanced Data"

Datasets for classification problems are often very unbalanced, with the
number of cases for one class being far less than the numbers for the
others. "Conventional wisdom," reflected in the structure of popular
software packages, is that the data should be artificially balanced via
resampling. This is both unnecessary and harmful. Alternative, more
sensible methods will be presented, with a recent Scientific American
article as a motivating example.

Dave Hurst
"Using RStudio Cloud to Teach and Collaborate"

RStudio.cloud is a cloud-hosted R environment and project workspace that includes the the RStudio IDE. (Just like the RStudio IDE there is a free version.) In this talk, we'll illustrate some of the features that make RStudio Cloud an ideal teaching environment with a mini-workshop on some of the fundamentals of the tidyverse.
