Hello all, looking forward to seeing you for our February meetup with two fantastic speakers, using R in awesome and creative ways!
Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel
Mine is Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematics at University of Edinburgh and Data Scientist and Professional Educator at RStudio. Mine’s work focuses on innovation in statistics and data science pedagogy, with an emphasis on computing, reproducible research, student-centered learning, and open-source education as well as pedagogical approaches for enhancing retention of women and under-represented minorities in STEM. Mine works on integrating computation into the undergraduate statistics curriculum, using reproducible research methodologies and analysis of real and complex datasets. You can find her at http://mine-cr.com/
Abstract: From reproducibility to interactivity: In this talk we demo a variety of authoring options in R that you can choose to add interactivity to your static reproducible computational documents using packages like rmarkdown, flexdashboard, shinydashboard, and shiny.
Anna Henschel
Anna is a third year PhD candidate at the University of Glasgow, where she conducts research in the Social Brain in Action Lab on the ERC-funded Social Robots project. She has a B.Sc. in Psychology from Konstanz University and a M.Sc. cum laude from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in Cognitive Neuropsychology. Her feminist activism was recently honoured with the YWCA 30 Under 30 Inspirational Women Scotland award. She uses R in her PhD and also just for fun :) You can connect with her on Twitter (@AnnaHenschel), LinkedIn and find her latest publications on her website (www.annahenschel.com).
Abstract: In this short talk, I am reflecting on fun web-scraping pRojects, specifically using the {rtweet} and {SpotifyR} packages. I will provide a walk-through of interacting with the Spotify and Twitter API, share some inspiration for possible ways we can visualize this qualitative data and also some “R-hacks” I like to use. In addition, I am going to talk about my experience of organizing a two day R-workshop (“Hack your data beautiful”) and taking over the We Are R-Ladies Rotating Curator account. I look forward to your questions!
