What we’re about
The Sierra Club's Range of Light Group (ROLG, Toiyabe Chapter) welcomes you to join us on our various events in the Eastern Sierra throughout the year! We are avid hikers, backpackers, snowshoers, cross-country skiers, kayakers, canoeists, birders, and environmentalists who treasure the Eastern Sierra of California, centered in Mono and Inyo Counties.
The Range of Light Group is part of the Toiyabe Chapter of the Sierra Club. Our core team is focused on public land use, environmental concerns, conservation efforts, and being involved in coalitions with like interests. In the post-pandemic world, we have mainly hosted events about these concerns. We also have Sierra Club certified members who, on occassion, lead hikes and other outdoor events.
Non-members are welcome to participate in all of our group's activities.

Upcoming events (1)
See all- Eastern Sierra Camp OutNeeds location
We'll be camping at Obsidian Flat Group Campground, which can be a staging area for any number of Eastern Sierra hikes including hiking to White Wing (elevation 10,016') from the campground. This hike advances along a creek, through a meadow, amongst red fir and lodgepole, to the top with sweeping views of the San Joaquin ridge, Mammoth Mountain, and the surrounding Inyo National Forest. Summit Post has a good description of the hike https://www.summitpost.org/white-wing-mountain/592975
Sign up must be done through the Sierra Club at the Eastern Sierra Camping Event page as there is a waiver that must be signed. This page includes links to the full agenda.
Another option is an easier hike to Bennetville, which is on the outskirts of Yosemite. The last option for Saturday will be to go birdwatching at Mono Lake and/or visit the south shore tufas with a postcard advocacy activity in the afternoon.
We'll have a service project organized for Sunday morning with time after to visit the visitors centers at Lee Vining or other sight-seeing activity.
