"What are you?" "Where are you actually from?" "You are so exotic looking."
If you are mixed, I am sure that you have gotten these questions or statements before. Of course we all know that this is coming from curiosity, but at the same time are these people truly interested in our cultural or racial background?
Those who identify as 'mixed' may not only experience stigmas from those outside of their race, but also from those within their own racial or ethnic groups. There may be increased anxiety and lowered self-esteem for those who aren't sure 'what they are.' While parents may want to use a color-blind approach, it may caused the 'mixed' child to feel that they don't know about their multiple cultural backgrounds.
This is why there is a need for this group. This group will help those who identify as 'mixed' to come together and talk about their own individual experiences to those who may have a better idea of what they're going through. I hope that this group becomes a space where those who are 'mixed' can come together and discuss their narratives of what they think being a mixed person in the US means.
