What we’re about
At Rancho Compasión, we provide a home to previously neglected, exploited, and abused farm animals. Founded by world-famous vegan chef, Miyoko Schinner, the sanctuary is nestled in the bucolic town of Nicasio, California, surrounded by beautiful redwood trees, bountiful wildlife, and classic Marin scenery. The sanctuary provides rescued animals with the support of a compassionate family of staff and volunteer caretakers.
We hold numerous events throughout the year for the public to attend special tours, dinners, holiday celebrations, education events, and work parties. Events are often ticketed fundraisers and all ages are welcome.
We also provide numerous volunteer opportunities. Volunteers can help with the animals, work on expansion and renovation projects, and attend special events. Volunteering at Rancho Compasión is lots of fun! Volunteers over the age of 13 are welcome, but minors must be accompanied by an adult and have a parent/guardian sign the waiver, listed below. We host monthly volunteer work days. There's lots of work to be done! We'll eat yummy vegan food, build play structures for the animals, expand living areas and pastures, clean the stalls, feed and give love to the animals, and much more. Our monthly volunteer days consist of working for the animals for a few hours in the gorgeous hills of Nicasio and then joining together for a yummy potluck or lunch. Come join us!
Are you a local? Our more regular volunteers come once or twice a week, (or more, depending on their schedule), and help out with mucking the stalls, feeding the animals, and, of course, giving them lots of love! Get in touch with us if you are interested in becoming a regular volunteer.
Please note all volunteers and visitors are required to sign a liability waiver before their first visit to the property (https://waiver.smartwaiver.com/w/576ac9a938de9/web/). We request you sign the waiver in advance to speed up the check-in process on the day of the event.
Rancho Compasion is a vegan facility and we ask that you not bring any animal products to the Ranch.

We are a 501(c)(3) organization, which means your donations are tax-deductible. As a public charity, we must receive a majority of our funding from the public to retain our charitable status.
