Beginner/Intermediate React Co-Learning
React is one of the most popular libraries out there for building user interfaces. Created by Facebook and used everywhere from Netflix to han Academy, React’s component-based architecture offers developers a great system iKn which to build modern single-page applications. React also has a thriving ecosystem of developers both using it and building supplementary tools that you can pull into your own projects. React isn’t limited to the web either – many companies also use it for their mobile applications. Prerequisites As stated in Facebook’s own React tutorial, “we'll assume some familiarity with HTML and JavaScript but you should be able to follow along even if you haven't used them before...note that we're also using some features from ES6, a recent version of JavaScript.” With that said, it would be more productive if those in attendance have built some, at the very least, “simple” apps using JavaScript and the associated front-end tech. To start, you’ll need Node.js installed on your machine. You can go here do so. -Some knowledge of Javascript, HTML, CSS required -Knowledge of ES6 Syntax and the ability to use NPM to install packages on your machine. Design This is not a class with a teacher. This is a group of co-learners working through a tutorial together. Ross and Doug are learners as well, and serve only to facilitate the co-learning. There will usually be some people in attendance who are more knowledgeable and can help you if you are stuck, but everyone is responsible for their learning and progress. Use your co-learners as a resource to share info and ask questions. The aim is to meet once every two weeks, for a minimum of two hours to both discuss our current projects/understanding as well as spend time co-learning or hosting in-house hackathons. Starting on the July 22nd meeting, we will spend a few moments at the beginning for introduction, updates, progress etc. Then we will dive into this video series: It has several 2-5 minute videos, each of which explores the basic features and concepts of React. It is well suited for beginners, but will likely teach intermediate users a few new tricks. We’ll see how far we get until there is about an hour remaining, then we’ll move on to exercises. The exercises exercises found in these training materials: Where to pick up for next week • Make sure you’ve got your environment set up, are running create-react-app, and are ready to write code when we start at 10am. For this meeting, we cannot slowdown to wait for people to complete this step • We have finished exercises 1-2 in React Training. We will start by looking at the next ones. If you have any questions for how to set up and be ready. Please ask Ross! Questions can be directed to: Douglas Wright ([masked]) Ross Cournoyer ([masked]) - About the facilitators - Douglas Wright Proficient in HTML, CSS, JavaScript as well as the jQuery library and just starting to get a hang of React.js.
