We have a range of VOLUNTEER and ADVOCACY opportunities, and will post events accordingly.
All support our efforts to CONNECT AREA AT-RISK YOUTH to READING RESOURCES! :)
We are scheduling two info meetings for those interested in being involved.
Currently, we need volunteers as listed -- LOCATION listed first: (*** are current needs)
***1. Elmhurst -- place our label on the donated books, and to sort and box them. Occasionally, we can use help DELIVERING THE BOOKS, to the location of need.
2. Elmhurst, other areas -- "man" fundraiser tables. Generally in front of Jewel, Wal-Mart, Starbucks. We also use these events to raise awareness about the state of literacy in our area, and our nation.
3. Area Preschools / Sunday schools -- Maywood and other areas with higher poverty rates. Volunteers, preferably a 1-to-1 ratio, help show the preschoolers how to READ to their stuffed animals. All items are donated, although we do work to have sponsorship for a new A-B-C type book and a canvas bag.
***4. FROM HOME -- emails and/or phone calls to supporters or potential/existing partners to coordinate events.
***5. FROM HOME -- Schedule store-front type fundraiser events. These dates are filling fast. Every phone call you can make helps us!
***6. FROM HOME -- help us organize! We are still VERY grassroots and can use some help planning events, both volunteer and outreach.
7. FROM HOME -- Research grants. Write grants. (We have no staff at this time.)
8. IN COMMUNITIES OF NEED -- direct outreach. We give out books right at Festivals and the like.

Readers Ignite was launched in 2012.
Readers Ignite is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to bringing reading resources and literacy connections to children in the communities surrounding Elmhurst, IL. This includes DuPage County and western Cook County
November/December of 2013, in a three week time period, we collected nearly 4000 children's books for the children in Washington IL. The books were delivered to the Morton Public Library on December 23, and were distributed to those who lost their homes in the November tornado.
December, 2013, an Angel Tree was coordinated. Books for 38 children of single moms from a local SHE group were bought / donated and given to the children for Christmas.
January/February 2014-- a children's book drive was completed for Family Shelter Services, a women's shelter for DuPage County.
Other 2014 efforts include a joint effort with groups in Glenview IL for a second children's book drive for Washington IL.
Readers Ignite has also sponsored nearly 30 literacy efforts jointly with A Book Above, in Elmhurst. These programs coordinate topics of interest to reach out to local children, and connect them with reading.
Other events have been tracked on Facebook under "Readers Ignite."
We are currently running a 2-in-5 Tuesday Campaign, raising awareness that, indeed, TWO in FIVE ADULTS in America read at a THIRD GRADE READING LEVEL OR BELOW.
Thank you for your interest in breaking the Cycle of Illiteracy!!
