Interested in decreasing your clothing consumption? Interested in slowing down the pace of fast-fashion on an individual level? Do you know how to sew or want to learn? For my 2017 NewYears resolution I have pledged a ready-to-wear fast. This may not be much of a challenge for some but for me this is a big deal. This means buying no new clothing for 365 days! (anybody else think this is crazy talk?!?!) Instead, I must either make it or buy it second hand....or (the catalyst for this meet up) take that second hand purchase and repurpose it into a new piece of clothing (that hopefully fits well). So the objective of this meet up is to connect like-minded individuals looking to connect and support one another in an effort to enhance sewing skills while being eco-friendly (win-win). This meet up does not require anyone to have made this ready-to-wear fast pledge but instead invites individuals who are interested in slowing down the fast-fashion pace in their world by going to consignment and second-hand stores, selecting clothing that can be upcycled for your purposes, and then making the appropriate adjustments to give them a second life!
Ideally this meet-up would involve going to consignment/second hand stores, purchasing items that you feel would be great to repurpose and then returning to a particular location (TBD) to strategize and discuss what we plan to do with our selected piece of clothing. My goal is not to make this meet up about shopping (which is fun and will be a key component) but about supporting and teaching each other how to see things from a different perspective (take a second look at that crappy purple sweater...its got great repurpose potential as a scarf and gloves!) and how to adjust clothes so that they fit well. As I am sure many know, verbalizing your plans helps an individual to follow through with them. It would be great to create a small community where more experienced sewers can share advice on how to make adjustments on clothing to the less experienced and were we can all share our ideas and efforts in a fun, comfortable, and supportive environment. If this description peaks your interest please sign up! I would love to meet you!
