6:45 - The UX of TV platforms at the BBC
The UX&D (User Experience and Design) team from TV Platforms at the BBC will be dropping in to give you three short talks about what it’s like to work in UX at a large organisation, how to lead products & businesses with UX, and why you should be interested in designing for interactive TV Platforms, such as YouTube, Amazon and Netflix. There will also be plenty of stories from the team sharing how they fit into the BBC and in particular the agile delivery processes used by the organisation. By the end they hope you leave with some practical insight of how UX can fit into agile product development and what life is like for a designer in such a large broadcasting giant along with a thirst to design for the future of TV. The hour will be split into three sections with some fun breaks in between.
Ray Mosley (https://twitter.com/raymosley) is currently a BBC UX&D Creative Director responsible for the TV platforms team. Prior to working at the BBC, he was in senior UX roles at agencies in Manchester (magnetic North and Retrofuzz) working with clients such as the Co-op, BBC, Google, Spotify, Sony Music, Universal Music, Wrangler and Lee Jeans. He has a passion for creativity no matter the industry, enjoys the thrill of creating high performing teams, and is currently loving the challenge of the new emerging platform in TV.
Al Jones (https://twitter.com/Itsaljones) is a Senior UX Designer at the BBC currently working in TV Platforms, having previously worked across BBC Sport, Live and the BBC's shared design framework, GEL. As a computer science graduate Al has a strong passion for how designers and developers can collaborate, and he is currently also undertaking a PhD in this field at the University of Chester while helping to lead the Design Trainee Scheme for the BBC. When not in work Al can be found pulling funny faces on Instagram, watching the mighty Stoke City FC, and enjoying the great outdoors in North Wales.
Jo Chambers is a Senior UX Architect at the BBC helping the UX&D teams navigate the complex worlds of data, experiences, and the connections of things. Jo is originally from New Zealand via a life in Germany where he worked as a consultant for interactive and on demand TV services, and he is also the founder and chief editor of influential website, Eye on Demand (http://www.eyeondemand.com), which helps spread the word on the growing world of VOD Services. When not in full work mode, Jo is busy discovering all the delights of his new home here in Manchester and travelling back and forth between the UK and Frankfurt. He loves a good structural map and a well made cup of coffee.
Paul Jackson (https://twitter.com/madebymagnolia) has a multi-disciplinary background, starting his career as a developer before finding his true calling as a UX designer, and has spent over 10 years in the industry, working with the likes of Disney, Honda and Nintendo along the way. At the BBC he is working on new TV apps and their prototyping, and he also recently led a team to victory at the Manchester City hackathon. In his spare time Paul wields guitar in two bands, attends (and occasionally curates) a world cinema night, and plans his next trip to Tokyo.
Ashleigh Middleton is a graduate from the Hyper Island Digital Apprenticeship course and works now as a UX Designer at the BBC. She has led a number of projects from TV services, such as BBC Sport & Live events, to systems used by worldwide business partners, such as Sony, Samsung and YouView. She has a passion for the world of Disney and can entertain you for hours with amazing insights about the world of experience design within the Magical Kingdom. Her current pet project is building the Instagram following of her insanely cute pomeranian dog, Koda (https://www.instagram.com/princekodathepom/).
Rob King (https://www.instagram.com/rjking_) is another product of the BBC design trainee scheme and after various placements around the BBC he chose to return to the fold within TV Platforms and has already had a hand on influencing the product over his first 6 months of joining. Rob is a graduate of the Interactive Media Design programme at Northumbria University and, as a strong graphic designer with even stronger vision for executing great film and photos, Rob has thrown himself fully into helping to lead the UX process within a large engineering team at the BBC. His claim to fame this year has been in being approached by the artist Shepard Fairey to help create a video for an upcoming project. He is also a massive Blackburn Rovers fan although in recent years his love has been tested.
This talk will be broadcasted live as well as archived on Periscope @UXManchester (https://www.periscope.tv/UXManchester/1BdxYXYDakNJX) (a link to the video will also be posted just before the talk on Twitter @RealUXMCR (https://twitter.com/RealUXMCR)).
