We are an enthusiastic community of recorder players of all ages and levels, ranging from near beginners to advanced. Our mentor program helps less experienced players. Our chapter activities include monthly playing meetings, a full day workshop in the Fall, and a weekend workshop for advanced players in the Spring. Chapter members not only play at our meetings and workshops; many are involved in other ensembles, including the Recorder Orchestra of New York, baroque ensemble, renaissance consort, smaller recorder ensembles, traditional music groups, and more. Our playing meetings are usually held on the 2nd Saturday of the month, September through May. These sessions are directed by some of the finest recorder and early music professionals in the region. We gather around 9:30am and playing begins at 10am. We break for coffee, conversation and treats (often home-baked) around 11:15, and the playing finally wraps up at 12:30pm. RSLI has a large library of music, music-related books, and instruments. Members can check out items at our monthly meetings. Our Music Director is Rachel Begley, a highly regarded recorder player and teacher. In addition to an active performing and teaching career, Rachel has served as our Music Director for more than 20 years, and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in recorder and early music from SUNY Stony Brook. RSLI is an American Recorder Society-affiliated chapter.
