This week on RfRx, Dr. Eugenie C. Scott discusses the importance of keeping creationism out of science education. Haven’t the Creationists packed up their tents and gone away? They have been soundly defeated in court case after court case, both the traditional and new-fangled “Intelligent Design” Creationists. They aren’t in the headlines anymore and seem to have given up trying to get their “science” taught in the public schools. But the ground rules for deciding First Amendment religion clause cases have changed in the last few years, which affects the seemingly perpetual struggle to keep good science in, and Creationism out, of the public school science class. Legislation is starting to creep in.

Dr. Eugenie C. Scott is the former Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education, Inc., a not-for-profit that works to improve the teaching of science as a way of knowing, the teaching of evolution, and the teaching of climate change. A former college professor, Dr. Scott is an internationally known expert on the creationism and evolution controversy, and science denialism. She has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from both the American Humanist Association and the Center for Inquiry, as well as the Skeptic Society’s James Randi Award. She also received the Richard Dawkins Award from the Atheist Alliance International. In 2009, Scientific American named her “one of 10 outstanding leaders involved in research, business or policy pursuits that have advanced science and technology.” She holds 10 honorary doctorates, and Asteroid 249540 Eugeniescott was named for her in 2014.

The first hour will be the topic discussion, followed by a Q&A session in which you can ask the guests your great questions. After the Q&A we’ll open up the lines for everyone and just talk and hangout for a bit with the hosts and guest(s). The primary focus of a Recovering From Religion support group is to provide ongoing and personal support to individuals as they let go of their religious beliefs. This transitional period is an ongoing process that can result in a range of emotions, as well as a ripple effect of consequences throughout an individual’s life. We are here to help each other through this journey.
