We'll be working on our second joint project - Air Quality Monitoring in the local area. From sensor to screen, we'll be exploring various exciting technologies to get an end-to-end solution prototyped.

We'll be looking at three key areas:

  • the 'field' end - measuring the various environmental parameters (temperature, pressure, humidity, particulate concentration)

  • the 'comms' - we want to explore using LoRaWAN

  • 'collection and display' - visualising / exploiting this data.

If you're only interested in one of these areas then you don't have to bother with the other bits - get involved with as much or as little as you'd like.

We'll have hardware available to work on in groups so you do not need to buy hardware. If you'd like to though, there's a suggested kit list below the meeting details.

---
Coffee, tea and pizza will be provided - the fuel of champions for great techie endeavours. Please RSVP so we can order enough of the doughy stuff.

Parking will be available on-site from 6:20pm - please use the left hand car park entrance (the barrier will be up) and park in any of the marked spaces. The event entrance will be at the front of the building (the car park is at the back) - look for the second door, it will be open or have a Red Sprite sign on it.

Evening outline:
6.30 - Arrive, eat, drink, mingle
7:00 – Start developing our air quality, and LoRaWAN reporting, sensors
10.00 - Meetup ends. Carry on the discussions in The Junction pub.

If you're interested in buying 'field' kit then Andy has come up with a helpful list of 3 items. There's:

  1. A 'BME' board for measuring temperature, pressure, humidity:
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BME280-Digital-Temperature-Humidity-Barometric-Pressure-Sensor-BSG/333204889971
    OR
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B077PNKCQ6/

  2. A LoRaWAN ESP32:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07ML6528K/

(Mark has bought a later model of but hasn't tried it yet:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B076T28KWG . Note that as of 2nd July this one is available on Amazon whereas Andy's suggestion is out of stock).

  1. The particulate sensor:
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PMS7003-Laser-PM2-5-Sensor-Digital-Measure-Dust-Concentration-With-Cable-1-Pc/263083448428
OR (expensive but in stock in the UK):
    https://coolcomponents.co.uk/products/pm2-5-air-quality-sensor-and-breadboard-adapter-kit-pms5003

Those 3 items come to around £45. Obviously you don't have to buy any of this stuff and you'll still be able to play as we should have enough hardware between us. Part of exploring this stuff is the process of putting it all together - hopefully we'll have enough expertise and bits between us.

If you'd prefer to go down the Raspberry Pi route, Neil has a kit which has an Enviro+ Phat, the particulate sensor that integrates with that, and of course the Pi itself (with SD card) - but that only works on Wifi and all told comes in at around £100. DM Neil directly if you want a part list for the Raspberry Pi option.

DM Neil if you have any queries on the above.
