Kubernetes Eastside Virtual Meetup

Details
Dear friends,
After the COVID-19 hiatus, we are back, albeit virtually. The is the relaunch of our monthly Eastside Kubernetes Virtual Meetup. We have put together a great program to welcome you back. Here are the details:
Program of Event
6:30 PM - Kick off, virtual social networking
7:00 PM - Patterns for building secure, scalable, resilient applications with Kubernetes and Service Mesh by Christian Posta, Global Field CTO at Solo.io
8:00 PM - Beyond Helm: Reusable Production Deployments with Pulumi by Lee Briggs, Staff Software Engineer at Pulumi
Speaker Bios
Christian Posta (@christianposta) is Global Field CTO at Solo.io, former Chief Architect at Red Hat, author (Istio in Action, Manning, Istio Service Mesh, O'Reilly 2018, Microservices for Java Developers, O’Reilly 2016), speaker, and open-source enthusiast and committer on various open-source projects including Istio, Kubernetes, Apache Camel, among others.
Lee Briggs is a Staff Software Engineer at Pulumi. With almost 10 years of experience designing, building and maintaining distributed and complex systems, he wears the scars of many deployment tools. When he’s not trying to fit monolithic applications into containers, he plays and watches soccer and walks with his family and dog, Cindy.
Abstracts
Building applications for cloud-native infrastructure that are resilient, scalable, secure, and meet compliance and IT objectives gets complicated; especially as they need to run across a hybrid deployment footprint, not just Kubernetes. We will explore different options and patterns for building secure, scalable, resilient applications using technology like Kubernetes and Service Mesh without leaving behind existing IT investments. In this talk we cover:
Multi-cluster design patterns with Kubernetes and Service Mesh
Service discovery across a hybrid environment
Identity federation, including SPIFFE, in a multi-cluster world
Emerging technology to help simplify multi-cluster and multi-mesh architectures
Helm is a fantastic tool that dramatically eases the deployment of resources to Kubernetes. With Helm, you can create simple charts that can be used by used repeatedly to deploy applications to Kubernetes clusters and increase the velocity of users deploying your application. However, in some circumstances, you might look at parts of an application stack and feel uncomfortable or be unable to deploy some of the components and dependencies to your Kubernetes cluster. Examples might include S3 buckets or managed databases that live in cloud providers.
In this talk, we’ll introduce Pulumi, an Infrastructure as Code tool that can help you deploy production-grade applications to your Kubernetes cluster and your cloud provider. We’ll examine scenarios where this might be desirable, and show you how to use familiar package managers that can help you reuse your components and share them with the community.
See you all at the virtual meetup...
