It's time for another newsletter, so please give this a read, as we've got quite a few new developments! We are now an official affiliate of the Council for Secular Humanism
As one of Northern Nevada's only groups to encompass Secular Humanism, we felt it appropriate to set up an affiliation with the national Council for Secular Humanism. I am currently exploring the level of support we'll be receiving, but we can plan on having speaker support in the future as well as discussion material provided from the Council. If you're unfamiliar with Secular Humanism, or the Council for Secular Humanism, please take a minute to visit their website at http://www.secularhumanism.org/
.Communicating with the media and non-members
At The Amaz!ng Meeting 8, held last month in Las Vegas, we were reminded that there are significant image and legal risks in what we say both as a group and individually. Though we haven't had any issues, I want to remind our members that the topics we discuss tend to be controversial, and we need to be careful with our words. Because of this, I would like to institute a rule that no individual member, other than event organizers, is to speak for the group or otherwise represent the group. Organizers are also to use peer-review in order to help make sure we're operating in the group's best interests with our communication.
This isn't meant to be discouraging, and it's only coming from a concern I recognized during the conference. If you have any questions or concerns at all, please contact me.Potluck Announcement
As you may have already noticed, we've got our first potluck scheduled two weeks from now for 6:30pm Saturday, Aug. 14th. Please RSVP (http://www.meetup.com/Reno-Freethinkers/calendar/14288301/
) and visit the signup sheet (http://www.meetup.com/Reno-Freethinkers/boards/thread/9512491
), it should be a fantastic time!Day of Humanism
We've been inactive in our volunteer efforts after going full-bore for the first two months. In order to keep things a little more reasonable, we'll be starting a monthly Day of Humanism, which could encompass things like charity events, community cleanups, blood drives, or merely volunteering at events that other groups are putting on. We'll begin posting new volunteering opportunities in a few days.Activism and Letter Writing
Semi-related to the communication note, we'd like to start generating some letter writing campaigns both from the group and from each of us individually. Please contact me ([address removed]) with any Separation of Church and State issues you're concerned about and would like to discuss with the group. I'll begin developing a list of topics for everyone to follow, as well as working to develop campaigns around appropriate issues, and get them posted on our site.PO Box
We now have an official mailing address. Please direct any snail-mail to our new PO Box:Reno Freethinkers

"An all atheist comedy show. You probably won't be struck by lightning if you attend. You definitely won't be made to sing, kneel, pray or tithe as this godless batch of funny folks serve up sacred cow, well done. People of all faiths are welcome and, so long as they bring their senses of humor, sure to have a good time." Featuring Johnny Steele, Keith Lowell Jensen, John Ross, and Samson Koletkar. More Details here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=[masked] I am currently looking into bringing Ha Ha Heathens to Reno later this year; please contact me ([address removed]) if you have media connections to advertise the event, or if you have connections to hook up the comedians with a place to perform or stay the night.
Have a great week, and I hope to see you at the potluck!
