Reno Freethinkers is now an official American Atheists affiliate!

Hi Freethinkers!

Recently, I've been doing some work in order to get our group listed with some national organizations that share our values as Freethinkers, and part of that has been in signing up as an official affiliate of the American Atheists

I realize that our group is made up of many individuals with different backgrounds, opinions, and belief systems, so I hope everyone takes the time to learn about the American Atheists organization, and what our affiliation means to the group and our members.

The American Atheists aims and principles include the following reasons for organization:

  • to stimulate and promote freedom of thought and inquiry concerning religious beliefs, creeds, dogmas, tenets, rituals, and practices;
  • to collect and disseminate information, data, and literature on all religions and promote a more thorough understanding of them, their origins, and their histories;
  • to advocate, labor for, and promote in all lawful ways the complete and absolute separation of state and church;
  • to advocate, labor for, and promote in all lawful ways the establishment and maintenance of a thoroughly secular system of education available to all;
  • to encourage the development and public acceptance of a humane ethical system stressing the mutual sympathy, understanding, and interdependence of all people and the corresponding responsibility of each individual in relation to society;
  • to develop and propagate a social philosophy in which humankind is central and must itself be the source of strength, progress, and ideals for the well-being and happiness of humanity;
  • to promote the study of the arts and sciences and of all problems affecting the maintenance, perpetuation, and enrichment of human (and other) life;
  • to engage in such social, educational, legal, and cultural activity as will be useful and beneficial to the members of American Atheists and to society as a whole.

  • I'm proud to say that our application has been approved, and that with this affiliation comes some benefits to the members of Reno Freethinkers.

    • 20% discount at the American Atheists store for purchases over $50.00 (email me at [address removed] for promo code).
    • Reduced convention fees for members of Reno Freethinkers and a free Affiliate meeting at the annual convention.
    • 20% first-year discount for American Atheists membership for members of Reno Freethinkers (email me at [address removed] for promo code).

    Ed Buckner, the President of American Atheists, has also written us a welcome note, which I'd like to share with everyone:

    Dear Ben M. and everyone else involved in Reno Freethinkers (and Blair Scott and Kathleen Johnson, cc'd),

    We are proud and pleased to be mutual allies with you and, by extension, all the reasonable people in the northern Nevada.

    We thank you for being an affiliate. And I also want to express my gratitude to the indefatigable Blair Scott (he's from Alabama, so he'll have to look up "indefatigable" in his dictionary) and to recommend that you keep in touch with him. He's truly a world-class resource, with an amazing amount of information readily available and a consistently generous and open willingness to share it. Not for nothing did we just name Blair "Atheist of the Year" at our national convention last weekend. He can and will help you make Reno Freethinkers stronger and bring you new members.

    I've lived in the great Southwest and I know that Reno and Austin are not exactly handy to each other (almost 2,000 miles apart, think), but if any of you can make it down to Austin on the weekend of 16 May for our protest against the Texas Board of Education, I hope you'll come. I'm not even yet 100% sure I can make it myself, but I hope to--and it'd be grand to get to meet you. Our VP and Military Director, Kathleen Johnson, is taking the lead on that event, so please e-mail her if you have any questions or suggestions.

    Thank you everyone, and I hope to see you at our next Meetup on April 17th! I have several other things I've been working on for the group and am excited to share as they begin to materialize, so a huge thank you for everyone's patience as I continue to learn and grow as the group's organizer.

    As always, if anyone has any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me via email at [address removed].
