Represent San Diego - Campaign Finance 101 For Voters
Details
Join Represent San Diego online for our monthly meeting the 2nd Wednesday of each month. This month, we'll be discussing the basics of campaign finance.
We’re all used to receiving requests for donations but what do candidates do with the money they raise? Learn how to understand your own representatives’ campaign finances, what rules candidates have to follow and how fundraising effects what our government does - and doesn’t deliver on.
To increase transparency at the local level easier, we're introducing the first phase of a new digital tool developed in partnership with Open San Diego to shine a light on campaign spending here in in San Diego. Transparency is vital to holding our elected accountable and thriving democracy so we hope you'll join us for the improtant discussion.
FUTURE MEETINGS
How Ranked Choice Elections Fight Corruption (3/10) – We know that Ranked Choice Voting gives voters more choice and allows us to vote our values at the ballot box but it also increases accountability and decreases the impact of negative campaigning. We’ll discuss the role RCV can play in restoring our democracy.
How Publicly Financed Elections Fight Corruption (4/14) – Public Financing doesn’t just open up a path for people in our communities to run for office, it also changes how candidates’ campaign and fundraise before - and after - they are elected. We’ll discuss the role Democracy Dollars can play in restoring our democracy.
Where Do We Go From Here? (5/12) – History shows that to achieve national change, we need 3% of the country to support it. Transforming San Diego elections can contribute to tipping our democracy in the right direction. As voters, we have the power to directly change our elections through the ballot initiative process or petition our local elected to do so directly. We’ll discuss the best path for Success in San Diego.

ABOUT OUR CHAPTER
As we kick-off 2021, we’re building a team to transform our local elections and give San Diegans' a stronger voice at the ballot box. We need your help.
Our current system works great for the wealthy and well-connected but not so great for the rest of us. All to often we see first hand the voices and values of voters ignored by our elected leaders. That won’t change unless we decide to take back our power by changing our elections. Only when we have a system where our elected officials are beholden exclusively to the voters they serve, will we have effective government that serves us all equally. We believe success on every other important issue – healthcare, education, infrastructure, immigration – can ONLY be achieved by fixing our democracy first.
