New Meetup: Bonaire Summer 2010 Revisited

From: David C

If you RSVP'ed yes last summer for this trip....this is a new pass....prior yes's are "wiped clean" you have to say Yes again!

Announcing a new Meetup for Triangle Scuba Group!

What: Bonaire Summer 2010 Revisited

When: Saturday, July 3,[masked]:00 PM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Let's make another pass at this trip. Update on the moment its $874...the high will probably be able to get there cheaper....but the trip is still a great deal if you like shore diving.

Please don't RSVP yes if you have casual interest. A yes means you know where the money will come from and that you really want to go. That you will go out of your way to fit it in your schedule.
Please note....the actual trip week may vary based on housing availability, if the week changes, obviously you can back out...but please let us know if that is likely when you rsvp. Also the trip may be 7-8 days depending upon the best airfares...sat-sun seems better on some carriers right now.

There are several ways to dive Bonaire, dive resorts, condo's, or houses. Shore dive, boat dive, or a combination. We are staying in an oceanfront house(or two!) which is slightly less convenient for boat diving than staying at a resort...but it is still very workable to do so. In addition, I believe we can rent a boat capable of taking us to Klein Bonaire for shore diving(boat will not be used for diving off the boat) for less than $200/day...its a short trip so we could ferry the entire group in 2-3 trips(if we have 20) and spend the day there for $10-$20/each!

I like to dive great places in wonderful accomodations for very little $$$. While there are many different possible places to rent Mike and I have chosen the following strategy:

We have two houses in mind, Elkadia and Beaurang. Beaurang can be rented in two halves and when you rent the first half you lock out anyone else from the second half. That means we can grab that house now and let another group add on later! Each floor of Beaurang houses 6 people and Elkadia houses 8. Which one we rent will depend upon how many people can and will commit in the next week or so. If there are stragglers who want to join when a given house is full Mike has found a great place that has units for two people at a time for $100 a night..not on the beach.

These places are palaces by my standards. You judge for yourself.

Expenses for the trip might be:
Truck Rental $330/wk for every 4-5 people(crew cab)
Unlimited air for six days(includes 30% nitrox) $139
Bonaire Marine Park Tag $25/once a year
House share-$350-$550/person(The only way its north of $450 is if only 4 people go)
Airfare-$550-$1000($600-$700 should be pretty easy)
With $800 airfare the trip is max $1600/person + food. Some of us(myself and my son) will be eating a lot of PB&J for lunch. You can get a great burger for dinner and escape for less than $15(its a really great burger) and lunch can easily be had for $10-$12 without looking for the cheap way out on a menu. Those who want to eat in most of the time will do much better. We know were the locals grocery store is..and that will save you at least 30% off the tourist joint.

As all food is imported, it is not cheap. Estimate food costs based on grocery prices 2x ours.

Your RSVP now indicates you are ready to put money on the table in a week or two. You have to be ready to pay for your entire share of the house. Everything else will be arranged by you in your own sweet time.

There is going to be some kind of better deal for those who front the money....the ones who do commit up front will decide if and how that will occur. In case that rubs someone the wrong way I will disclose that that idea is my responsbility, not Mikes...all hostility can be directed at me!

This is shaping up to be a great trip...I guess we will know in a week whether its imaginary or real!

If we get 8 solids we will be booking Elkadia and its possible that the trip will be closed at that point so if you are going to go now is the time to commit. I hope it will work out that we have the second half of beaurang open for late entries...and, of course, others can always find their own accomodations(I will help...but not coordinate).

Let's go!
