Kansas City Public Library - From Around Here

The Kansas City Public Library: Central Library

https://kclibrary.org/signature-events/around-here Date: Thursday, February 21, 2019 Program: 6:30 pm Location: Kansas City Public Library - Central Branch Address: 14 W 10th St, Kansas City, MO Columbus Junction, Iowa, doesn’t fit the Midwest small-town stereotype. As large agricultural operations and meat processing plants have become prominent rural employers, people from Latin America, Southeast Asia, and elsewhere are drawn in to work. White residents are moving away. Small towns are increasingly diverse. Photographer Lara Shipley and journalist Ann Friedman examine the trend in a discussion of their multimedia project spotlighting the shifting demographics of Columbus Junction. The southeast Iowa town reflects the impact of migration -- regionally, nationally, and internationally. Shipley is an assistant professor of photography at Michigan State University. Friedman is co-host of the podcast Call Your Girlfriend and a regular contributor to NYmag.com and The Los Angeles Times, among other outlets. Joining them in the discussion are Rekha Sharma-Crawford, an immigration rights attorney working with the nonprofit legal defense firm The Clinic, and artist Jose Faus, a native of Bogota, Colombia, who received a cultural ambassador grant from the U.S. State Department for his community-driven murals. Shipley's and Friedman's venture is funded by a Rocket Grant administered by the Charlotte Street Foundation and Spencer Museum of Art. MO/KS ICE Detention Helpline - Spanish-Speaker Volunteer Training

Date: Saturday, February 23, 2019 Time: 10 - 11:30 AM Location: Kansas City-St Joseph Diocese 20 W 9th St, Kansas City, MO[masked], United States Details: Do you speak Spanish? Do you want to do more to help detained immigrants in our community?? Join us to be trained as a KS/MO Detention Helpline Dispatcher. After being trained, you may volunteer as a Dispatcher as much or as little as your weekly schedule allows. For years, those who are detained by ICE in Missouri and Kansas have been transferred to rural county jails where they are expected to navigate an extremely complex legal process while communication with family, friends, and lawyers can be extremely difficult (sometimes impossible). This dilemma has led to the arbitrary detention and deportation of countless of our community members. Local immigration lawyers and immigrant rights organizations are launching a volunteer-operated Detention Helpline to serve as a lifeline for those who are detained by ICE. Detention Helpline Dispatchers will operate as a lifeline for detained individuals and their families by serving as an access point as well as a bridge to local resources and free legal services. Our Dispatcher Training will take place at the Kansas City-St Joseph Diocese at 20 W 9th ST Kansas City MO 64105. There will be parking available at the event location.
