Hello Brooklyn/Queens RPCV's, 

The Bronx Zoo's Future Leaders Program is looking to recruit four RPCVs of diverse cultural backgrounds to come speak to students at the Bronx Zoo in honor of Black History Month for the program's monthly Career Mentoring event.  The event will be taking place Monday Feb 24 from 3:30-6:00pm.   Interested RPCV's can contact the program coordinator directly with a short bio at [address removed]

Below is more information about the program and its monthly career mentoring component. 

Career Mentoring is a monthly workshop where professionals from diverse fields speak to FLP participants about their careers, education and overall experiences.  It is an inspirational and motivating experience for participants due to their exposure to various occupations.

Location: Flaherty Room (Congo exhibit) at the Bronx Zoo, 2300 Southern Boulevard Bronx NY, 10460.
Format: Informal panel discussion 

Program detail: The Future Leaders Program is a workforce development program for under-served youth in New York City.  The vision is to develop the next generation of global citizens, teaching them the critical skills necessary to be successful in the world of work and build collaborative relationships through community engagement.

·         Future Leaders participants are at risk youth between the ages of 16-24.   They are not yet enrolled in college and have various career interests: from business to psychology to conservation.
·         Participants are part of a 2 year training program focused on developing communication and presentation skills, academic goal-setting, and career readiness through training and mentoring.
Talking Points for discussion:
  • What did you study?  Where did you go to school?
  • How did you decide what you wanted to study?
  • What was your first job?
  • What is your job now?
  • What struggles or barriers did you face and how did you overcome them?
  • How did you get from your first to your current job?
  • What suggestions would you make to someone contemplating college?
  • What do you wish you knew back then?
  • What was the most surprising discovery or lesson you learned along the way?
  • Any tips for success or motivation?
