• Bonita Park to Double Cannon 2.0 & Orange Park Acres

    Bonita Creek Park

Come see the Ostriches of Orange Acres in horse country, the Turkey Vultures of Santiago Creek, the Bird Man of Orange, and awesome views of the San Gabriel Mountains and the Valley below from Via Escola in Villa Park. Our Adventure Challenge for today is the two Cannon Hills in the City of Orange just North of Chapman Av, hence the ride name Double Cannon. The first hill is only about 6/10th of a mile long but as the sign says, it has a 10% average Grade. But don't worry if you don't think that you are up to the challenge, there is a bypass just before we go up, that goes around the reservoir nearby, and you might even see some Turkey Vultures there where they hang out. But I think everybody should take a shot at this just to see how far they can get. You can always turn around to the bypass. The second hill is a little longer about 1 mile up but not as steep except for the last quarter mile, but by that time you are totally warmed up and you should be just fine. Then just after you turn onto Via Escola, we stop to enjoy the beautiful view of the Valley below. We also get to ride thru Orange Park Acres on the way back. This is a 42 Mile ride going over to Bonita Canyon Dr. to Culver and up to Irvine BL, where we take our first break at the Starbucks on the corner, then to La Colina then Newport to Crawford Canyon where we catch Cannon up and over easy, only about a half-mile, then to the second, although a little longer, but easier Cannon hill up to Via Escola and thru Villa Park. Then we stop at Bagel Me on Santiago Bl for a snack break and regroup. Then we head back on Santiago to Orange Park Bl where we take a right turn, saving the hill if you were to go straight, so don't miss this turn. Then we go thru horse country turning right again at Meads to ride past some awesome homes, then left on Chapman and right on Trails End and regroup at the restroom in the Park right there. From there it is all downhill on Jamboree and Peters canyon Trail to Harvard and University and to Bonita Creek Park. So check this map out and I hope to see all of your smiling faces there. Wahooo!!! There are a lot of turns on this route, and we don't have a designated sweeper unless someone would like to volunteer, so please print out your own cue sheet from ridewithgps, or just follow the leader. Thanks. But we do have the "regroup spots" along the way and some in addition to those stated above. The first stop is of course at Starbucks/Brueggers on the corner of Culver and Irvine Bl., The next is on Crawford Canyon & Newport Bl., Then at the top of the first Cannon, then on Via Escola just after turning off Cannon, then Bagel Me, then Orange Park Bl & Santiago Canyon, then Trails End in the Park, Portola & Jamboree, Harvard and the bike trail, University & Harvard. One thing I noticed: This whole route has pretty much nice roads and beautiful scenery the whole way. Yaaaa! • Hollywood Sign Hike via Wonder View Trail

    Cahuenga Peak

Awesome little "Hike to the Hollywood Sign". Short and sweet, only 3.5 miles, but steep. with an elevation gain of 985 feet on this little hike, and with some rocky parts, but well worth the effort with those awesome views from way up high overlooking downtown L.A. and the Hollywood Reservoir below. We will take the Wonder View Trail from Wonder View Dr and Lake Hollywood Dr. Parking just South of Lake Hollywood Dr and on Wonder View Dr itself. Last time no cars were parked there and I did check with Security and they said it was OK to park there, however you should check the parking signs anyway in case things change. L.A. is very strict about parking and gives instant tickets so beware. So we start the hike right there and walk up the asphalt street to Trail Head a short distance away. Then we start the climb. The first stop is the "Wisdom Tree" with an excellent view from there. So good photo op. People leave notes and pile up rocks and make their marks there etc. Also, there is the "Tree of Life Trail" nearby that we can check out on the way back. Then we continue heading toward "The Sign" for another 1.5 miles or so until we hit Mt. Lee Dr which is another asphalt service road that goes right up to the top and you will see all of the Antennas and MicroWave dishes there, and then right below is the back of the Hollywood Sign as seen in my photo above. Then we enjoy the view, rest up a little, eat some snacks, take some photos of that awesome view from there, and head back. See my previous hike map from Ride With GPS. Which is not really set up for hiking so some specs are way off, but you get the idea. Photos of the hike are there also if you can find them. Just click on Overview on the upper right-hand corner and scroll down to see a photo then click on arrows to see all the previous photos of this hike. Remember to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, etc. https://ridewithgps.com/trips/24445310 Looking forward to this second hike for me. So let's go "Take a Hike". Woohoo!! After the hike, you will be super hungry so nearby is an excellent Mexican Food place called "Poquito Mas". They have the most delicious Mahi Mahi Tacos there. Yummy!! https://www.poquitomas.com/burbank/
