RocPy is Rochester's local (and only!) Python user group. We exist to give others the opportunity to work and play with local Python developers, learners, employers, and enthusiasts. All skill levels are welcome, if you are interested in Python, join us!
Monthly presentation series: these are 45-60 minutes presentations on topics of interest to the Python community. We also plan on having 5-10 minute lightning talks as well. Soon, we'll have a signup process for members wishing to participate! Monthly weekend workshops are also planned.
Fred will be talking about the collection of well over 100 python packages that makes up the Rubin Observatory Data Management Pipeline.
Beginning in late 2023/early 2024 the Rubin Observatory will begin a 10 year survey of the entire southern sky, essentially making a 10 year video of the stars and galaxies that can be seen from Northern Chile. He will give an overview of the challenges and advantages of maintaining such a large code base, spread over multiple repositories as opposed to a single repo. This includes how we incorporate a large C++ code base into those packages, maintaining an environment that is constantly updated, and making install as painless as possible for end users.
Along the way I'll offer tips on things that (in his opinion) work well and others that we have either changed over time or wish that we could have.
