Why Humanists Should Read Fiction

Online event

Humanists often read nonfiction—be it the hard science or social science or philosophy. But what about fiction? From atheist and humanist representations in fiction to what the term “humanist fiction” could possibly mean, this session will explore the importance of fiction in the humanist community and why it's important for humanists to read fiction.

Eric Nguyen is the presenter. He earned an MFA in Creative Writing from McNeese State University in Louisiana and has been awarded fellowships from Lambda Literary, Voices of Our Nation Arts (VONA), and the Tin House Writers Workshop. He is the editor in chief of diaCRITICS.org and author of Things We Lost to the Water. Nguyen also previously worked as grassroots coordinator of the American Humanist Association. Life in New York State After Roe v. Wade

Online event

In recognition of the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion nationwide, Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York and Rochester NOW invite you to join us for an upcoming virtual program, Life in New York State After Roe v. Wade.

The constitutional right to an abortion has never been more at risk. According to the Guttmacher Institute, in 2021, more state abortion restrictions were enacted than in any year since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973.

As we await a Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health, a case that could effectively end federal protections for abortion, our collective work has never been more important. We are grateful to be protected by the Reproductive Health Act in New York State, but we know that a crumbling abortion infrastructure nationwide affects us all.

Join us as we recommit ourselves in the fight for abortion justice.
Speakers will include several leaders in the fight for abortion access on the local, state, and federal level including:

U.S. Senator Kristen Gillibrand
Michelle Casey, President & CEO of PPCWNY
Sarah Timmerman, President of Rochester NOW
and more to be announced!

RSVP with the attached link, after which you will be sent a Zoom link.

Should there be religious exemptions from public health requirements?

We have been invited by the Houston Chapter & the Central Savannah River Area Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State to join them for this event which addresses the question of whether religious exemptions should be allowed to evade public health requirements such as covid-19 vaccinations.

The panelists for this event include Dr. Jose A Vazquez, an infectious disease specialist; Anthony C. Reese, a medical ethicist; Rev. Randy Cooke, co-pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in August, GA; and Alex Luchenitser, Associate Legal Director of Americans United.

Be aware that this is a contentious issue not just in other states, but in NY State as well. On December 13, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected challenges brought by a group of Christian doctors and nurses and an organization that promotes vaccine skepticism to New York's refusal to allow religious exemptions to the state's mandate that healthcare workers be vaccinated against COVID-19.
