Finally, to round out our months-long discussion of transactional romance - here, the heroine hires the hero to teach her some things. If you didn't know, The Kiss Quotient was one of THE biggest romance releases of 2018 and I haven't discussed it yet because the wait was so long for library patrons. Get on the hold list for The Kiss Quotient ASAP to get your hands on it! As of mid-January there were 20 holds (which is better than the 60+ back in fall 2018). THE KISS QUOTIENT by Helen Hoang Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases — a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old. It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice — with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan — from foreplay to more-than-missionary position... The bespectacled, brilliant fourth daughter of the Marquess of Needham and Dolby cares more for books than balls, flora than fashion and science than the season. Nearly engaged to Lord Castleton, Pippa wants to explore the scandalous parts of London she's never seen before marriage. And she knows just who to ask: the tall, charming, quick-witted bookkeeper of The Fallen Angel, London's most notorious and coveted gaming hell, known only as Cross. Save the date for Saturday, May 11 - Durham Library will host the Spring into Romance festival! This is an all-day celebration of romance where we can meet authors and other romance lovers, hear a panel on current topics in the industry, and, most importantly, buy lots of great books both new and used. There will be signed books given away as door prizes, and delicious beverages to sip. Be sure bring your friends too - the more the merrier! Featured authors include Katharine Ashe, USA Today-bestselling author; Tracey Livesay, Emma Award winning author; Reese Ryan, winner of the Donna Hill Breakout Author Award; Deborah Fletcher Mello, winner of the RT Award for Best Multicultural Romance; Annie Rains, USA Today-bestselling author; and Jennifer Lohmann, winner of the RT Book Reviews Seal of Excellence Award (also known as our former book club leader!). Books by these authors will be available for purchase, and a book signing will take place after the panel discussions. The event will conclude with a “mocktail” party from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Light hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. Running concurrently will be a special Friends of the Library Romance Book Sale. Registration is not required.
Come celebrate Pride Month with us by reading queer romance! We're suggesting three to get you started across queer identities and genre settings - one f/f (contemporary), one m/m (YA), and the first mainstream romance to feature a non-binary protagonist (historical). However, this only scratches the surface of the spectrum of queer romance (especially since all the protagonists and, I believe, authors here are white) and articles like this can help you see the spectacular diversity of identities and stories to discover: https://bookriot.com/2018/09/11/must-read-gay-romance-novels/ UNMASKING THE MARQUESS by Cat Sebastian REGENCY IMPOSTERS series, #1 Robert Selby is determined to see his sister make an advantageous match. But he has two problems: the Selbys have no connections or money and Robert is really a housemaid named Charity Church. She’s enjoyed every minute of her masquerade over the past six years, but she knows her pretense is nearing an end. Charity needs to see her beloved friend married well and then Robert Selby will disappear…forever. (Please note: the author has stated that she believes Charity would think of herself using "she" pronouns. When discussing the book, I think it would be fine to use "she" pronouns to match her self-perception or "they" pronouns to acknowledge their non-binary identity. But that can be another point of discussion!) Read more at: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35270780-unmasked-by-the-marquess *** SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA by Becky Albertalli CREEKWOOD series, #1 Made into the move LOVE, SIMON Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised. She’s engaged to charming art curator Paul Michael, has successfully made her way up the ladder at a multinational law firm and has a hold on apartments in Soho and the West Village. Suffice it to say, she has come a long way from her Kentucky upbringing. But the rug is swept from under Katie when she is suddenly dumped by her fiance, Paul Michael, leaving her devastated and completely lost. On a whim, she agrees to have a drink with Cassidy Price-a self-assured, sexually promiscuous woman she meets at work. The two form a newfound friendship, which soon brings into question everything Katie thought she knew about sex—and love. (Full disclosure, I won an ARC of this in a Goodreads giveaway and enjoyed it, but that has not affected its selection. Terri recommended it for this month!) **PLEASE NOTE this has been moved from June AND it is the SECOND Thursday of the month due to the Fourth of July! Hope to see you here - these would make great beach reading over the holiday!** After a few months of heavy themes, now it's time for some fluffy escapism! Historical romance versions of While You Were Sleeping and of Willy Wonka-meets-the-Bachelor. If you're wondering why the covers look similar, these are both Avon books from 2016 (historical retellings of pop culture was a big trend), and that year Avon had its 75th anniversary, "diamond year," and added that to their logo. Alas, the Hangover-based book I promised/threatened isn't available at Durham (or Wake or Orange). But if you're intrigued, ask your library to buy WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND by Jennifer McQuiston. WHILE THE DUKE WAS SLEEPING by Sophie Jordan The Rogue Files series, #1 Shop girl Poppy Fairchurch knows it’s pointless fantasizing about the Duke of Autenberry. Still, dreams can’t hurt anyone . . . unlike the carriage Poppy spies bearing down upon the unsuspecting duke. After she pulls him to safety, the duke lapses into a coma and Poppy is mistaken for his fiancée. But one person isn’t fooled: his arrogant and much too handsome half-brother, Struan Mackenzie. Soon Poppy isn’t sure what she wants more . . . the fantasy of her duke or the reality of one smoldering Scot who challenges her at every turn.
