The Format

This will be similar to a mini code retreat. We'll be tackling Conway's Game of Life in pairs of juniors and seniors.

We've had one of these in the past, and it was extremely well received. Since the ROROSyd group has recently seen a new wave of young developers it seems appropriate to do a few more of these now.

• The intention is provide an environment for deliberate practice outside of the pressures of work (deadlines, pressure etc).

• Your focus should be on writing the best possible code.

• A Test-Driven Development approach will be strongly encouraged.

• Seniors will help the Juniors get a minimal development environment working, typically on the command-line and with a simple editor such as Sublime or TextMate.

• After initial guidance, the pair should try "ping-pong pairing": one writes a test, the other writes the code to pass that test.

What to bring

• A laptop, preferably running OSX, Linux or other unix.

• Ideally, you should have ruby installed already.

• If you have a preference for text editors, make sure it's installed.

• If you don't already have a GitHub account, go and sign up now: GitHub (
