Quantified Self community

The Quantified Self community (http://quantifiedself.com/) supports new discoveries that are grounded in accurate self-observation. This year's Quantified Self Europe conference (http://qs17.quantifiedself.com/program/) is convened at the CASA400 Hotel (https://hotelcasa.nl/) in Amsterdam, in collaboration with the Quantified Self Institute (https://qsinstitute.com/) at Hanze University (https://www.hanze.nl/eng) in Groningen.

If you are a self-tracker, toolmaker, science leader, designer, or educator, we hope you'll join us for over 100 unique talks, discussions, and presentations. We'll be working together to advance our field by gaining access to our own data; developing methods for nontraditional, participatory, and community-based research; supporting personal, social, and business collaborations; and demonstrating the value of self-initiated research.

Most importantly, we'll be sharing what we've learned about ourselves in a new series of original talks about self-tracking and N-of-1 experiments that answer our three prime questions:

>>>> What did you do, how did you do it, and what did you learn? <<<<<<

Marcel van der Kuil of Running 20/20 (http://www.running2020.com) will join the conference and contribute with the following two presentations:

  1. Privacy and Data Ownership (‘Breakout’ session)

  1. The Quantified Marathon Runner (‘How to’ session)

See below for more information on the presentation formats. These presentations will hold fey findings from the Running 20/20 Meetups. The sessions are good way to interact, share views and to take discussions to a deeper level.

  1. QS Runners Workshop

https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/a/1/5/600_461923541.jpeg

In this workshop. we’ll put our bodies and minds into motion, by putting on our running gear! We will hit the streets for a running test, in park Frankendael (https://www.amsterdam.nl/toerisme-vrije-tijd/parken/park-frankendael/), close by the venue of the CASA400 hotel (https://hotelcasa.nl/). QS runners are invited to bring all tracking gear they can carry, in order to bring some depth and perspective to the basic measurement.

The test is based on a simple protocol developed for Dutch elite athletics, as a way to quickly and easily derive a reliable approximation for the maximum heart rate (MHF) and the anaerobic threshold (AT). We will take this test to another level, because we

Surprisingly, most runners do seem not know their (current) MHF and/or their AT. Not knowing or using (current) AT and/or AT means suboptimal training. This test will help you to (learn how to) determine these key drivers yourself!

All runners are invited to share their measurements after the training, but this is not mandatory (check my privacy presentation!). Results and feedback will be shared in the plenary session on Sunday morning.

Additional information

‘Breakout’ session

Breakout sessions are an hour long and are a time to discuss topics that are of interest to the QS community in a group setting. These sessions usually start with a 10-minute primer on the subject by the facilitator, and then go right into discussion.

‘Howto’ session

This is a knowledge-sharing event among peers. Many people in the community have deep knowledge in their area of interest. How-To’s are a one-hour session where you can come and learn from a knowledgeable peer about some aspect of a Quantified Self practice. It could be understanding what a biometric really tells you, or ways to use tracking to better understand something, or a demonstration of a technique you can use to get more out of your data.
