LDN Talks April 2019

Details
Agenda:
• Welcome & networking
• News and Announcements
• Speaker: Mike Baker - Tokio streams in a production environment
• Speaker: Luca Palmieri - Machine Learning using Rust
• Speaker: Jamie Brynes - Integrating Rust into SpatialOS
We're being hosted by Smarkets at their offices near Tower Hill Station.
-----
Mike from Smarkets will give a talk on how they use Tokio in production for their order gateway and core infrastructure:
Tokio is an open source library providing an asynchronous, event driven platform for building fast, reliable, and lightweight network applications. It leverages Rust's ownership and concurrency model to ensure thread safety.
Mike will be giving us some insight into how Smarkets uses Tokio streams in development.
-----
Luca will discuss how Rust can play a major role in the future of the ML industry:
New patterns and processes are emerging to build ML products while existing tools are showing their limits. ML is just started to grow out of its engineering infancy. We will have a look at the state of the scientific ecosystem in Rust.
Luca is a Mathematician by training, Data Scientist by trade, Rustacean by night, who builds ML products and data-intensive applications at TrueLayer. He is one of the maintainers of ndarray-stats and an active contributor to ndarray.
-----
Jamie Brynes Jamie Brynes, a software engineer at Improbable, presents a hobby project Rust integration for SpatialOS, a multiplayer game platform-as-a-service.
