It was a nice day. All the days had been nice. There had been rather more than seven of them so far, and distributed computing hadn't been invented yet. But clouds massing east of Eden suggested that the first SaaS was on it's way, and it was going to be a big one.

The Angel on the Eastern Gate put his wings over his head to shield himself from the first Spam-mails. "I'm sorry," he said politely. "What was it you were saying?" "I said, that one went down like a lead balloon," said the serpent. "Oh. Yes," said the angel, whose name was Aziraphale. "I think it was a bit of an overreaction, to be honest," said the serpent. "I mean, first offense and everything. I can't see what's so bad about knowing the difference between garbage collection and memory ownership, anyway." .......

Hallo, hi, buenas, salut, こんにちは, היי,

this going to be our first meetup in the year 2020. The year of the rat.
I hope all of you had a good start into the new year. I am still in spain playing guitar like every year in February so I will keep it short - He said with a straight face after selecting a book, quoting and adapting parts of the first page of it...

I will most likely start off this years by giving a talk about a project I have been working on the last ~ 2 years in rust.

It's a SaaS-API based on actix (yes another actor model fanboy).
I will go through the fun parts like guessing chained future return types a.k.a "why?". Either return types aka known as "ok?". And why it is so much better to become a gardener than being a programmer ;). At least we don't have to care about transaction safety while maintaining the shortest possible lock window in a distributed atomic model across threads when we plant our tomatoes.

If you want to spare yourself my rambling about how often I refactored the structures, the nice pitfalls of a monotonic tuple approaches and so o, please let me know if you want to give a talk! We don't want to kit the scratch-marks at the door of people trying to escape or having to erase "help me" messages again. ;)

Please note that really all levels of talks are welcome, those who ever gave a talk know how much work it is to give one. And in my experience over the last 13 years of professional programming I can always learn something new from everybody I meet. So please don't be shy g it's not like your getting paid anyhow so per definition it's not a "professional"-talk :)

So see you hopefully in 2 weeks ... if not I will ban you all! .... no pressure ;)

best Jakob

Addendum:

We have a new lightning talk coming in by Christian Amsüss. FYI this will be the second talk because he won't make it in time to start before me.

Don't waste time reviewing crates!

Instead, make it count.

These 3 simple steps[1] don't just give you a notebook for crates you've
looked at, it also allows you to share it. The network of trust you
build that way can give you confidence in otherwise overwhelming
dependency trees.

Can we set up a web of trust around the Vienna Rust meetup?
