THE STRAWBERRY PEAK CHALLENGE HIKE

Take the Strawberry Peak Challenge.

This hike is for those who wonder what John Muir used to do, for those who would like to explore off the beaten path, for those who don't want to see another soul in the woods all day.

The 3rd class west ridge of Strawberry Peak, 6164', the Mountaineers Route, is the fun climb of the San Gabriels. Six miles and 2700' of trail hiking and rock scrambling adventure.

This is an official Sierra Club trip, conducted by trained and certified leaders: Malia Latin, Jaime Kalenik, Jose Mendez, Jeremy Netka, Will McWhinney.

interested Hikers will be asked for additional information to make sure that they are aware of the risks involved, are fit enough for the adventure, and are comfortable with the planned activity.

You should be comfortable on class 3 rock (if there any questions on what this means, leave a comment), have appropriate hiking gear (no climbing gear is needed, just comfortable and sturdy hiking boots and attire) and be fit enough to enjoy an all day hike.

6 miles in cross country terrain is not like 6 miles at Griffith Park. There will be rocks you have to use your hands to climb. There will be times you have to move aside brush. There will be (god forbid) times you can't take a selfie or talk to your friends. Some people say one mile cross country is like 3 miles on trail. That's without the rock scrambling.

As stated in the time allotted, you should expect to be out all day. This route may only be 3 miles each way, but the terrain will likely mean slow going at times.

No bathroom at the trailhead, definitely no dogs allowed. Sunscreen, hat, long pants are wise choices. Due to brush, I don't recommend umbrellas, long items that can catch (jewelry, scarves, etc.), or shorts.
