Electron — If you can build a website, you can build a desktop app with Javan M.

Abstract:

Electron is a framework for building native, cross-platform applications with the web technologies you know and love: JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. It’s a happy marriage of Chrome (Chromium, technically) and Node.js that empowers you quickly to build and distribute rich applications. And in this talk I’ll do just that! Watch me build an app from scratch and learn how easy it is.

Bio:

Javan Makhmali is a Programmer at Basecamp, and the sole developer behind its Electron-backed desktop app. He’s the co-creator of Trix, and a regular contributor to Ruby on Rails.

Sorry to hear that :( The session is being recorded (sessions.semjs.org) and we'll be going to Arbor Brewing afterward, if you'd like to come late and get a drink with us.

Sadly drinking + driving is not a good mix on a worknight with a longish drive home, but i look forward to watching the session and attending the next one!!

Here's the demo app I made for this talk: https://github.com/javan/desper. I'll be going over the code on screen so having a local copy isn't required at all, but free to clone (and run `npm install`) before arriving to save the wifi.

We'll be discussing http://electron.atom.io/. There's no need to pre-install anything, but you can check out Electron's quick start app (https://github.com/electron/electron-quick-start) if you want to tinker.

Are we going to be discussing any software in particular that I should pre-install before the event?
