Job Summary:

The Director of Search Engine Optimization sets the overall direction, strategy, standards and guidelines for a family of websites. The role not only employs quantitative analytical rigor to optimizing the sites for search, but also has deep experience in this area that is used to fill in the gaps when there is incomplete information. The role is responsible for driving the majority of traffic to the websites.


The Director of SEO must work across functional groups to ensure everyone clearly understands the SEO effects of changes to the website. The role must work with Product Management and Usability to optimally balance user experience with SEO. The role must also initiate changes that will enhance the sites’ SEO. The role should develop industry relationships outside ofcompany, and is expected to regularly attend conferences about SEO.

Essential Functions:

  • Set the overall direction, strategy, standards and guidelines for SEO.
  • Keyword Research - Develop and expand keyword inventory to provide direction and insight into content development. Develop strategies to broaden keyword relevance and search term matches.
  • Collaborate with Product, Creative, Usability and Engineering teams to optimize various site elements, site structure, architecture, linking and content, and to ensure that new releases and enhancements meet SEO requirements.
  • Content development - Create and/or supervise copy to be included on the website.
  • Create educational tools and guidelines - Work with IT to create test cases, Create do's and don't materials and update, amend or completely change as needed.
  • Research current trends and Search Engine algorithm changes - Attend relevant conferences to gather insights from search engine representatives and professionals. Continually monitor new advancements in SEO and evaluating the risk/reward of integration.
  • Relationship development - Create and/or supervise relationship development with potential relevant sites
  • Optimize and update onsite components that are relevant to SEO success.
  • Educate and coach team members regarding SEO best practices.
  • Communicate specific SEO requirements to business/product stakeholders.
  • Link building - internal and external.  Optimize effectiveness of onsite links.  Research, identify and establish partnerships for link building.
  • Research emerging technologies for opportunities to expand viral 'buzz' (video, image optimization, press releases)
  • Track and analyze site performance, user behavior and conversion. Use web analytics data to further refine projects.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Analyze competitor websites.  Perform competitive analysis and monitor competitive landscape. Analyze industry trends and standards for SEO.
  • Regular reporting on SEO status at a market-keyword level and overall.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

         Deep understanding of how search engines work, and how to optimize websites to be ranked highly by search engines.

         Strong analytical skills to understand consumer and usage data.

         Able to work effectively across industry groups and experts, as well as across internal groups.


Qualifications, Training, and Experience:

The candidate must have a minimum of three years experience with search engine optimization. Bachelor’s degree required.
