Talk Summary
In this talk, Hadley will outline his vision of data science as a field, focussing on the corner in which he's most familiar: designing tools for data scientist-programmers. He'll talk about why he believes programming is so important for data science, why code is an excellent medium of computation, and outline some of the challenges that visual tools face. Hadley will also talk about data science challenges where programming doesn't help or feels excessively clumsy, and a little about why he is a passionate believer in R.
Speaker Bio
Hadley Wickham is Chief Scientist at RStudio (http://rstudio.com/) and an Adjunct Professor of Statistics at the University of Auckland (https://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/), Stanford University (https://datalab.stanford.edu/), and Rice University (http://statistics.rice.edu/). Hadley builds tools (computational and cognitive) that make data science easier, faster, and more fun. Hadley is from New Zealand but currently lives in Houston, TX.
