Composition is one of the most controversial topics in photography. Some critics deny that it is teachable, some even say that it is irrelevant in photography, and then there are people who maintain that composition is more important than light. In this highly unusual exploration of the topic, Erin Babnik discusses the art of composition with regards to its controversies, its ancient history, its evolving trends, and its ability to help generate meaning in an image. Erin’s points weave together historical, practical, and theoretical considerations with a focus on the art of composition in landscape photography. With its wide-ranging ideas, this talk will be of interest both to landscape photographers and to appreciators of the genre.

About Erin Babnik:

Erin Babnik is a full-time adventure landscape photographer known for her ambitious and expressive style of photography. In her writing and public speaking, Erin explores topics with a unique blend of art historical, philosophical, and instructional ideas, an approach that has made her one of the most notable voices among the current generation of landscape photographers.
Erin’s dedication to the medium of photography evolved out of her years working as an art historian, photographing at archaeological sites and in museums for the purposes of teaching and research. She first started experimenting with photography creatively in art school, working with both film and early digital cameras to explore the potential for photography to communicate ideas in graphic design projects. While working on her Ph.D. dissertation in Art History some years later, she began to produce photographs with the kind of dedication that would result in a high level of both intention and technique. Her goal of producing a high-quality archive of photographs for educational purposes ultimately led to the pursuit of compelling images as ends in themselves.
Erin subsequently spent years producing photographs on assignment before transitioning to her current focus on wilderness photography. Erin now travels worldwide to teach photography workshops and to give talks about her work and about the genre of landscape photography. Erin is also a member of the illustrious nature photography team Photo Cascadia.
