ABSTRACT: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the U.S. healthcare system is substantial. Providers are implementing new procedures to ensure the health and safety of their patients, staff and family. Payers are implementing policies to provide better support for their members including; covering testing, diagnostics, treatment and hospital admissions for COVID-19 patients. Providers and payers are leveraging newer technologies like telemedicine to provide support for patients when in person visits are not advised.
Challenges in revenue cycle management are emerging as patients in emergency situations are being treated by out-of-network providers, increasing patient financial obligations, impacting the provider’s collection efforts and challenging payers to explain why out-of-network treatment is not covered. Additionally, providers are seeing income drop due to lower patient volume as elective procedures are delayed and emergency procedure volume declines. Technology will play a critical role throughout and after the crisis as providers and payers look to provide the best care and support possible for their patients and members.
