What we're about

Hi all,

I was happy to find this group back in Spring 2014 - to get to know other trail runners and share some of the trails I run in the city. I was sad to see David, the former leader, leave town. I know one day he'll come back and run this city again.

About me: I'm highly dedicated to trail running in the city. I prefer to run on dirt, so any stretches of pavement will only be a means to getting to the next trail head. I have a few standby routes that will show up here often. However you're never to old to learn a new route. (For example, I just tried out the sweet little climb up the east side of Corona Heights.)

I'd like to mix things up a bit - night runs, vertical work, after work, sunrise/sunset, etc. On occasion, I'd like to leave the "urban" behind. More on that later.

As far as pace is concerned, my philosophy is to leave no one behind. I'd much rather encourage front-runners to go out as fast as they'd like, giving them directions to the next junction.

About you: If you're new to the city, come on out and learn a trail or two. If you've been around a while and have some favorites, come on out and lead us.

Let's get out there and run!

Sunrise Mt. Sutro Run - 5 miles

Willard and Frederick

Starting time pulled up to 6:45AM. Meet at Kezar (southeast gate). The run goes uphill right away - Willard, the Farnsworth steps, Edgewood and into the Mt. Sutro Open Space Reserve. The trails are beautiful and well-maintained (sutrostewards.org). We link, via Tower Trail (under the iconic tower), to Twin Peaks. Each morning at Twin Peaks is unique, and the city below is always incomparable. Alternately, meet at the south (upper) end of Edgewood (about five minutes later), right where the trail enters the woods. Though I don't advocate driving to a run, parking is just a bit easier there.

Sutro Stewards Trail and Habitat Maintenance

Hi all, The mission of the Sutro Stewards is to create urban recreational opportunities while practicing sustainable habitat conservation through stewardship. The Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve, located in the geographic center of San Francisco, was overlooked by surrounding communities for a century. In the last decade, the true value of the open space was revealed through the Sutro Stewards’ creation of multi-use trails, allowing the public to explore this exceptional place. Since 2006, the stewards have mobilized volunteers to build trails, remove invasive species, and grow and install native plants. For active outdoors types, the reserve is a city treasure, with 5.1 miles of trails and the work continues, as we build an important connector and future segment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail (with a trailhead on Clarendon Ave.). Whether you prefer to work on trails or maintain habitat, come on out, join a great group of folks and let's get some work done. After, there's beer/soft drinks and pizza and a wonderful chance to catch up with new and old friends. Meet at 9:00AM at the Woods (parking) Lot, up behind UCSF, just off Medical Center Way, about half way up the hill toward the Aldea Housing. Look for the shipping container in the parking lot. In addition to signing up here, please go to sutrostewards.org and register on the website. Thank you!! Mike PS. We meet on 1st and 3rd Saturdays at 9:00. But there is an amazing variety of other events, such as bird walks, flower walks, guest speakers, plant sales, etc. on the website!!
