Headlands View & Dive Bar Too

Details

Hey Happy Hour Hikers!

It's time for another hike designed mostly to show y'all an amazing SF Bay dive bar that you need to see.

THE HIKE

The hike will be a loop, starting at the waterfront of Ft. Baker in Sausalito. We'll head west along the scenic waterfront and then directly under the Golden Gate Bridge for an amazing view seldom seen. From there, we start an uphill walk (it's a closed concrete service road) to get up to the start of the real trail, the SCA Trail. This trail does some fun zig-zagging up the side of Slacker Hill and then heads north through some really scenic parts before ascending an unnamed hill top (at 2.25 miles) that sits about the Robin Williams tunnel on 101.

The view is tremendous - north to the Sonoma mountains, a great shot East of Tiburon and Sausalito, and then south towards the SF skyline. Very few people will be up there. We'll hang out and snack for 30-45.

From there we will head down over 101 and follow a lightly used trail back to Ft Baker, wandering through another higher-end bar called Farley Bar, just to show you another cool spot for later. It's part of the Cavallo Point Lodge. Then, we'll walk you through a WWII battery with a great view before looping back to the bar.

Facts & Figures:

  • 3.5 total miles and maybe 750 vertical feet
  • Should be around 1.5 hours of hiking, 30 minutes or so at the top.
  • Starting later for this hike since it's shorter, and it's great to see the view later in the day, closer to sunset.

THE HAPPY HOUR

This bar is special. There's not one person I've taken that doesn't say, wow, this bar is unique. You're right on the water with a front-row view of the Golden Gate Bridge, with hills all around you.

And inside, it's like you're drinking in an Elks club with a nautical theme and curiously small windows. And a big dance floor. And locals from Sausalito of all ages. I live taking my drink outside the bar and finding a good view of the water. They don't care. Drinks are cheap. People are friendly.

And, they serve up a mean cheesburger. If they're in the mood :)

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Plenty of parking just past the bar.
*Four-legged furry friends allowed, in the bar too.
*As always, only RSVP if you are sure you can make it, and update your RSVP asap if plans change. This is important! We limit the number for each hike for everyone's enjoyment, so if you no-show, other people can't go. :( Please do not bail in the last 24 hours since it doesn't give people time to join from waitlist. Thanks!
  • There is a bathroom at the meeting area.
  • If you want to bring guests, they must join the group and RSVP for the event, too, so we can know who's coming. Thanks!
