Since the beginning of the year, I've hiked approximately 260 miles as of April 28. Not bad, but these were all day hiking miles. Although I appreciate a day hike, I've been yearning for something else... something that a few hours on the trail cannot provide. Yeah, I've had a hankering for some backpacking.
If you would like to backpack more often, or if you are a newbie and want to learn, then sign up. Here's the plan: two training/planning day hikes, then I'll start posting the Backpacking Series for the summer/fall. At the training/planning day hikes, we'll share ideas, discuss possible trips, make sure everyone is prepared with the appropriate gear, etc. The first training/planning day hike is Mt. Wilson on the 11th of May, followed by a Mt. Baldy (via the Ski Hut trial), Dawson Pk., and Pine Mtn. (elevation gain of around 6,500 feet and 16.5 miles) day hike on the 18th of May.
Mt. Wilson Loop via the Rim Trail: Saturday, May 11.
We'll start from Chantry Flats and walk down the paved road. Before reaching Sturdevant Camp, we'll make a right to Newcomb Pass. We'll summit via the Rim Trail, have lunch/snack and plan out some backpacking trips at the Cosmic Café, descend to Manzanita Ridge and return via the Upper Winter Creek Trail. Although the majority of the hike will be shaded, wear sun protective clothing or sun block for the exposed sections. The last time I was near the area, the bugs were beginning to be active. Bring insect repellant and appropriate clothing. Please do not bring your dog(s). I'm leaving my dog Ruby at home for this one because of all the poison oak and poodle dog bush, and the sheer strenuousness of this loop. The stats for this hike are around 17 miles with an elevation gain of 4,200 feet. Our pace will be moderate, but we can adjust to the group's collective abilities.
We'll meet at 6:30 am in the Chantry Flat Parking lot (the lower section near the start of the paved road/trialhead). Or if you are early, I'll be gearing up next to a silver Sentra. Since the parking lot fills up very quickly, arrive before 6:30 to find a spot. An adventure pass is required to park. If you need directions or if you are wondering about what to take, please email.
