What we're about

We are a secular humanist group that meets on the third Sunday of every month for good company and intelligent discussion. Our topics range from science to philosophy to social issues, and much more. Our ideal is to help our community and the world at large.

Our meetings are hosted by the UU Humanists of Fresno, meeting jointly with the Humanists of the San Joaquin Valley. We meet at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 2672 E. Alluvial Ave.

Noon potluck, you are welcome with or without food. Discussion starts at noon and lasts until about 2 p.m.

Child care is available if requested. Please request as early as possible, at least 1-2 weeks before the event. Message Devin Carroll.

If any of this sounds like you, come join us! Check the event schedule for details.

We also have a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SJVHumanists/ (https://www.facebook.com/SJVHumanists)

Enriched Determinism. A discussion of scientific determinism and autonomous creativity, with mention of free will, predestination, and other concepts.

Why did Romeo fall in love with Juliet? Was it predetermined by the positions of protons and photons shortly after the Big Bang, or did evolution add meaningful information? How did humans become the most creative entities in the known universe?

If you would like to prepare for this discussion, you can start with Devin Carroll’s essay on Enriched Determinism on this webpage:

John LuValle recommends The User Illusion, which "does an excellent job of reviewing the experiments and research on Free Will".
The User Illusion: Cutting Consciousness Down to Size – by Tor Norretranders.
