What we're about

Looking for other book lovers like yourself? A good story is even better when you've got friends to share it with! This Meetup Group reads a wide variety of novels, fiction, memoirs, and whatever else we decide upon.

As described in our title, this is for residents who primarily live and/or work in South Orange County; however, we do have some members who reside outside the designated area that like our group! This is a women's social book club, so we primarily read books that appeal to women as a whole (though, not to say we are going to limit ourselves!).

There are dues required for the Meetup Subscription cost and to defray other costs. All dues go toward the Subscription first. Please feel free to join the group for a 60-day trial period; if you decide you’d like to stay, you can pay at the end of the trial period through the club's WePay system. Unfortunately, no cash or checks can be accepted.

We like our members to feel free to discuss books in a no-pressure, stress-free environment. Therefore, please note that we have a long-standing policy of not inviting authors to our meetings to speak about their books or causes. Additionally, we do not disseminate materials promoting/relating to any cause, business or publication. Our book club meetings are purely about discussing the particular book that has been chosen for a given month. We have a few published authors within our book club, but we choose not to read their books for the purpose of a book club discussion.

Before attending any meeting, please make sure you RSVP. If the meeting is full, your name will automatically be placed on the waitlist in the order it was received. The waitlist is automated, so when someone changes their RSVP from "yes" to "no", the next person on the waitlist is immediately placed on the RSVP "yes" list. For this reason, if you are on the waitlist but later determine you cannot attend, we ask that you update your waitlist status to enable the person after you on the waitlist to attend.

A few of you have asked recently about bringing guests, we are flattered that you want to share our club with those close to you. Because we are such a large club and we often have a waitlist we cannot allow guests, as we want our members to have priority to attend our discussions.

For security purposes, if you join the club, we do require that you post a recent profile picture of yourself upon joining and before attending any meeting. This picture must be a recent, clear, forward-facing photo of your face and shoulders. Although the club is private, we are not anonymous to one another. We sometimes have group outings on non-meeting days, and knowing who you are helps to confirm that only our members are present at our club’s outings.

We hope it won’t happen, but if there ever comes a time when you have to leave the group, please remember to use the “Leave the group” tab found on your own Meetup Profile page. This is the only way to stop automatic annual dues renewals processed through WePay. The Leadership Team of SOCWBC is NOT responsible for updating the membership status or WePay accounts of our Members or ex-Members.

For more than six years now, we've been fortunate to have a private room at Mimi's Restaurant for our monthly meeting. At the end of last year, club leadership was informed by Mimi's management that each month going forward, they would be contractually assigning a minimum $200 food & beverage purchase for continued use of our room. While we feel that this amount is small in comparison to the size and seclusion of the room we use, our total purchase amount drops whenever we use our AAA discount, BOGO meal coupons or if attendance is light for a particular month.

To honor our contract and ensure continued use of our private meeting room, we are asking members to make a food & beverage purchase when attending a meeting, and forego the use of the AAA discount or any BOGO meal coupons. A full meeting could easily meet the required $200 food & beverage purchase total. In the event that RSVP'd attendance is fewer than 15 members 24 hours before the scheduled meeting, we will be moved from the room and seated elsewhere in the restaurant (with no minimum food & beverage purchase).

We are saddened that we have to apply this new requirement, but it is the only way to ensure our continued privacy and the ability to have our robust discussions without being impacted by other restaurant patrons. We hope that you understand and support this new requirement.

Thank you for joining our group! We look forward to having enthusiastic book discussions with each and every one of you. Also, join our private group (SOCWBC) on Facebook!
